Culture

The present-day Château de Montségur is primarily the result of the reconstruction of a new royal fortress, commissioned by the King of France from the second half of the 13th century onwards after the fall of the Cathar castrum. At the Musée de Montségur, reconstructions illustrate the organisation of the former Cathar castrum.

The GR® 107, the Chemin des Bonshommes, connects Foix in Ariège with Berga in Spain and includes Montségur as a site of Cathar heritage. In Montségur, Cœur de tr’âme offers spinning and weaving activities, as well as a discovery workshop on medieval wool processing using experimental archaeology and living education.

The Musée archéologique et historique de Montségur is located in the village and can be reached on foot from the Château via a signposted path. A visit to the museum takes between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on the visitors’ interests.

Nature

The Massif de Saint-Barthélemy regional nature reserve extends over more than 1,000 metres of elevation, from the montane to the alpine zone, and includes alpine grasslands and low heath vegetation on its ridges.

Hiking

The Tour du Pog is a route of around two hours around the Pog, offering unusual views from a distance. The hike to the Jasse de Prémaout takes about two hours and leads to a small shelter overlooking the valley floor of Montségur.

The La Canalette hike takes about one and a half hours and leads to montane grasslands with gentians, holly and rowan trees. The Tour du Roc de la Mousse is a two-hour hiking loop with a difficult section on a steep slope.
