Geographical setting
Midi-Pyrénées is a destination in south-western France between the Atlantic and Mediterranean and combines a diverse cultural heritage with varied landscapes.
Since 1 January 2016, the former regions of Midi-Pyrénées and Languedoc-Roussillon have formed the Occitanie region.
The winter focus is on the Pyrenean sector, where skiing and snow sports are promoted as activities.
Nature and activities
The Pyrénées–Mont Perdu landscape, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, includes meadows, lakes, caves and forests. Midi-Pyrénées is considered a region with 30,000 kilometres of marked trails; hiking is one of the promoted outdoor activities.
The Cirque de Gavarnie is located within the Parc National des Pyrénées. It is classified as a Grand Site de Midi-Pyrénées and has been UNESCO-listed since 1997. From the village, it can be reached on foot or by mule in less than an hour.
Transhumance has been maintained for centuries in the Pyrénées–Mont Perdu area. The Salat below Saint-Lizier offers opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, rafting, hydrospeed and fishing.
The Canal du Midi stretches for 240 kilometres between Toulouse and the Mediterranean. It can be explored by boat, bicycle or on foot; river tourism on the Canal du Midi is one of the activities promoted in Midi-Pyrénées. Visitors can also hire a boat on the canal without a licence.
The Bastides and Gorges of Aveyron cycle route passes through the Causses, the Lot Valley, the Viaur Valley and the Aveyron gorges.
Culture and history
The Canal du Midi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; one section lies in the former Midi-Pyrénées region and includes Haute-Garonne and Tarn. The canal was built between 1667 and 1694 and is considered an exceptional achievement of modern civil engineering.
The Church of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Camino and is an example of pilgrimage heritage. Toulouse is a world capital of aviation, home to Airbus, and also a European space capital.
The cloister of Moissac is UNESCO-listed. The Musée Départemental in the Palais des Evêques in Saint-Lizier houses archaeological, art-historical and ethnographic collections.
Midi-Pyrénées is associated with 25 Grands Sites.

Gaillac wine is AOP-certified. Midi-Pyrénées is considered a wine region with 15 AOP designations and is associated with Roquefort, foie gras, black Quercy truffles and saffron.
Cajarc is designated as a Site Remarquable du Goût for the production of Quercy saffron.
