Winter sports
The Šachty ski area has several cross-country skiing circuits; detailed race courses are listed with lengths of 1 to 3 km. The first ski jumping competitions took place in Vysoké nad Jizerou in 1905. Several ski jumps were built later, including those in Šachty.
Trails
The Skijácká stezka in Vysoké nad Jizerou is approximately 3 km long and runs along paved and forest paths. It is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists, and especially for parents with children and prams. The Skijácká stezka has three play elements with ball runs. They provide children with information about the cycle of life in nature in a playful way.
Culture and history
The stone Church of St. Catherine was built between 1725 and 1734 around an older wooden church; a vestibule was added in 1817.
The Vlastivědné Museum in Vysoké nad Jizerou was founded in 1930. It houses the restored moving Christmas nativity scene by Jan Metelka “Kovárenský” from Sklenařice. The nativity scene was created between 1878 and 1914 and is regarded as an outstanding work of folk art.
The Divadelní okruh begins in the town square of Vysoké nad Jizerou. It was established on 17 August 1986 as part of celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of the local amateur theatre. Krakonošův divadelní podzim, held annually, is a festival of rural theatre ensembles and regularly takes place in Vysoké nad Jizerou in mid-October.
The Vysocká pouť is a traditional pilgrimage event. The main programme takes place on náměstí Dr. Karla Kramáře, with the accompanying programme at Divadlo Krakonoš.
Townscape
Městské sady, also known as Park básníků, are located behind Divadlo Krakonoš and include a pavilion with a relief map of the Czech and Polish sides of the Krkonoše Mountains. Městské sady offer a panorama of the Krkonoše Mountains with the dominant peak Kotel, also known as Kokrháč.
Local tradition
Vysocké zelí is associated with the cultivation of cabbage seedlings in Vysoké nad Jizerou for more than 100 years; the seedlings were called hlavatka.
