Smilkov: Hotels and accommodation

Smilkov’s most important landmark is a Baroque château with two wings. It has stood since the end of the 17th century and may have been built on the foundations of an older fortress.

Culture and history

A fortress already stood in Smilkov in the mid-14th century. The local lords adopted the name “Lords of Smilkov” from this fortress.

Smilkov Château is surrounded by a château garden with an amphitheatre decorated with allegorical statues. The chapel of St Anne is part of the château complex. The garden theatre of Smilkov is a uniquely designed Baroque garden complex of the Italian type. Its terraces, ramps and stairways form an intricately structured architectural composition with a theatrical character above a central basin that has since been filled in.

A Neo-Gothic chapel stands in the middle of Smilkov village square. Another historic site is Kouty Water Fortress, which was probably built in the 14th century. Today, visitors can see the surviving remains of the rectangular structure at Kouty Water Fortress.

Landscape

Smilkov lies in a hilly landscape on the edge of Česká Sibiř and Český Merán. Příkop Pond lies southwest of Smilkov Château; a well house is located on its southern shore.

Surroundings and cycle route

Smilkov is one of the twelve municipalities of the Voticko microregion, which cooperate in the Kraj blanických rytířů tourist area. The “Z Miličína Českou Sibiří” cycle route is designed for mountain bikes and trekking bikes.
