Mezno: Hotels and accommodations

The municipality of Mezno is home to the Suchdolský rybník nature monument, which is also designated as a Natura 2000 site of Community importance. The area covers 10.3681 hectares and was first designated on April 15, 2005.

Nature

The Suchdolský rybník nature monument protects the great crested newt (Triturus cristatus), a critically endangered and specially protected species. The landscape in the municipality of Mezno is predominantly agricultural and includes fertile fields and bodies of water; an extensive forest complex lies to the south. Some of Mezno’s original 26 ponds are still preserved in the municipality today.

History and culture

Historically, Mezno belonged to Borotín Castle and was first explicitly mentioned there in 1517. A chapel dating from 1752 stands in the village square. It has a narrow tower with a low roof and a small bell hanging between four windows. A painting of Saint Florian hangs in the chapel; next to it, there used to be a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk.

The area covered by the Mezno land-use plan also contains the immovable cultural monument Boží muka u Mitrovic, registered under number 30525/3-4827.

Transport and routes

Mezno railway station is located on line 220 between Olbramovice and České Budějovice. Access to the station, including the passenger shelter, is barrier-free. On the international Greenways Prague–Vienna cycling route, the journey was continued as far as Prčice.
