Ogassa – Taga, Trails and Mining History
Nature
At 2,035 m, Taga is the most prominent and highest peak of the Serra Cavallera and the inner Ripollès.
The route through the Serra Cavallera can be covered on foot or partly by mountain vehicle. The CamĂ de Vidabona runs mostly through Ogassa. Along the Torrent de la Font Gran, a route passes the Font Gran, where water emerges from inside the earth in a fenced-off area. The Tall Obert de Can Camps is Ogassa's most significant fossil site, where a great variety of fossils can be found.
The nature trails can be compared according to landscape form and mode of transport, without combining the individual focal points.
History
Ogassa's coal mines were an important reason why the railway reached the Ripollès. The Surroca coal mines were exploited from the end of the 18th century and remained in operation until 1967; they were then closed. At Ca l'Armengol, a cable-car station was opened in 1940 as a new solution for transporting coal.
The route per la Via de Baix follows the former mine railway to the inclined plane of the Meseta de Baix. It passes the remains of the Balaguer cement factory, where the chimney and the bag-filling facilities are visible. It also leads to the remains of the house at the Meseta de Baix.
A circular route along the former mine railways follows the former connection between the centre of Ogassa and Toralles railway station. The Ruta del Ferro i del CarbĂł follows the former railway line connected with coal extraction in the Ogassa mines.
Ogassa has a community-created museum that explains the work of the miners and the production of coal briquettes.
On the historic trails, you can distinguish between industrial traces and natural sites.
When considering accommodation for a skiing holiday in Ogassa, compare the travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions on the respective offer pages. This comparison can be made alongside your personal selection between nature trails, mining history and culture.
