Culture and history

Loka Stage is regarded as a theatre with a tradition spanning more than a hundred years; it is associated with the performance of several international and Slovenian dramas each year. Puštal Castle is privately owned, and the castle courtyard is not open to visitors. The Church of the Holy Cross at Puštal Castle contains a fresco attributed to the younger Giulio Quaglio, entitled “Descent from the Cross”, dating from 1706.

At the DUO Arts and Crafts Centre, the programme includes organised demonstrations by craftspeople and workshops in craft skills. The Path to Puštal thematic trail tells stories about how the inhabitants of Puštal lived in the past and about Puštal’s connection with combs and frogs.

Hiking, cycling and interactive trails

The Škofja Loka Hills are crossed by numerous well-maintained and marked hiking trails. The trails are suitable for family outings, recreation and more demanding hikes. The marked Loka Cycle Route is 390 kilometres long and divided into 13 stages.

The Loka Mountain Trail leads over the highest peaks of Lubnik and Blegoš and has 32 checkpoint stamp locations. Romuald's Path is an interactive trail with 13 stations that begins and ends in the “Passion Room” at Mestni trg 42. The interactive tour on Romuald's Path takes approximately 1.5 hours and includes a game, a competition and 13 challenges.

The Three Castles Path begins at Loka Castle. Along the trail, visitors reach or are shown the ruins of the Tower on Krancelj and Wild Loka (Divja Loka) Castle. Different numbers of stages, stations, time estimates and checkpoints provide specific reference points for personal planning.

Nature and mountains

The Godešič Meadows are considered a zoological and forestry natural heritage site. In Kevderc, the most famous cave in Loka, various wild animals can be observed. A short side passage at the cave entrance leads to Lubnik cave. The cave area is also known for archaeological finds, including Lubnik-type pottery and stone tools.

Lubnik is a mountain in the immediate surroundings of Škofja Loka. Pasja Ravan, Bezovniški Vrh and Blegoš are mountains in the vicinity of Škofja Loka. The different geographical designations indicate an immediate surrounding area and a wider region without combining the locations into a single uniform location description.

Regular direct connections to Ljubljana, Kranj, Železniki, Gorenja vas, Poljane and Žiri depart from the bus station in Škofja Loka. Škofja Loka is approximately half an hour from Ljubljana, Kamnik, Kranj and Jože Pučnik International Airport.
