Škofja Loka – Medieval Centre, Crafts and Trails
Accommodation in Škofja Loka
A walk through Škofja Loka leads through one of the best-preserved medieval town centres in Europe. Amid historic buildings, rivers, museums, crafts and guided trails, the town reveals its many different facets.
Culture
Loka Castle was originally built in 1202 and now houses archaeological, historical, cultural-historical, art, natural history and ethnological collections. The Škofja Loka Museum is also located in the castle. It presents archaeological, historical, cultural-historical, art, ethnological, natural history and sports-related collections, as well as an open-air museum.
The stone semicircular bridge over the Selca Sora was built in the middle of the 14th century and is considered the only one of its kind in Central Europe. In Škofja Loka, the Selca and Poljane Sora rivers meet; they then continue flowing as the Sora River.
In the grounds of Loka Castle stands a 16th-century house with a black kitchen. It illustrates the lives of cottagers and small farmers from the wider Loka area. The Capuchin Library of Škofja Loka preserves Dalmatin's Bible, books with bindings dating from before 1500 and other rare book treasures. To visit it, go to the Capuchin Monastery and ring the bell there.
