Dravograd: Hotels and Accommodation

In Dravograd, Lake Dravograd forms a unique natural environment: the artificial reservoir has developed into a wetland with islands and reed beds. More than 150 species of waterbirds find shelter and breeding grounds there. At the same time, the lake is an important spawning ground for fish and a habitat for amphibians, reptiles, aquatic mollusks, and aquatic insects. As an ornithological reserve, Lake Dravograd is part of the European Natura 2000 network.

Nature

The Košenjak–Velka area is protected as the Košenjak–Velka Landscape Park. A deposit of the magnesium tourmaline dravite was discovered at Dobrova near Dravograd in the last century.

Trails

The Dravograd–Grad forest educational trail is a marked circular route approximately 2 kilometers long that takes about two hours and includes 15 thematic stations. The Boberček Trail is an educational and experiential path in Dravograd. Pot za srce is a 5-kilometer circular route around the center of Dravograd; it starts and ends at the health center and is marked with colored trail signs and information boards.

The Drava Cycling Route runs through Dravograd from the Vič border crossing through the town and via Bukovje toward Trbonje. In addition, Štrekna connects Velenje and Dravograd over 35 kilometers as a fully paved cycle path separated from other traffic.

Culture

At the raft harbor near Trbonje, the Koroški splavarji present visitors in an entertaining way with the former economic importance of rafting in the Drava region. The Gestapo Prison Museum in Dravograd displays five prison cells with the last messages from prisoners before their execution, survivors’ accounts, and a memorial room dedicated to the events in the Dravograd region during the Second World War.

The Church of St. Peter on Kronska Gora has two bell towers. Below Ojstrica stands the Church of the Holy Spirit, dating from the early 17th century and containing Slovenia’s largest surviving area of painted wooden ceiling.

In Libeliče, visitors can view the Carinthian Plebiscite Museum, a black kitchen, and a former school classroom. The Fishing Hall at Lake Dravograd houses a natural history collection on the aquatic life of the Drava, Meža, and Mislinja rivers. The Pukštajn castle ruins on the former Bukovje noble estate house a permanent exhibition on the 1991 Slovenian War of Independence and a learning center with a biodynamic garden.
