Culture and History
Tunnels stretching 1,300 metres run beneath the old town. They were built as shelters during the Second World War. The Church of St Cantianus is a cultural monument of national importance. In the ossuary next to the church, the foundations of a late antique baptistery can be seen.
The single-nave Gothic church on Pungert dates from the 15th century, more precisely from 1478. At the upper end of Vodopivec Street, Jože Plečnik designed a monumental entrance to the city of Kranj. The Museum Trail explores the city's history and connects six noteworthy buildings in the old town.
A viewing platform situated high above the conglomerate rock offers a view of the confluence of the two rivers.
Prešeren and Museums
The permanent exhibition at the Prešeren House presents the poet's life, from his birth in Vrba through his schooling in Vienna and his life in Ljubljana to his death in Kranj. A memorial museum opened in the same house on 8 February 1964; France Prešeren lived there from autumn 1846 until 8 February 1849.
The Gorenjski Muzej is the central museum and gallery institution of the Gorenjska region. Its collection areas include archaeology, ethnology, ancient history, art history, cultural history, modern history and the present day.
The Prešeren Theatre Kranj organises the Festival Week of Slovenian Drama, which supports contemporary Slovenian drama.
Nature and Trails
The Kokra River canyon below Kranj is more than 30 metres deep. A guided circular trail with a local guide leads through the canyon. The 845-metre-high Sveti Jošt nad Kranjem offers another perspective on the landscape: it is just a few minutes from the centre of Kranj and offers opportunities for relaxation, excursions into nature, views and dining.
The path through Savski drevored runs from Savski otok to Športni park Struževo. The well-maintained gravel path has several benches.
The Kranjska kolesarska roža comprises six scenic cycling routes to nearby places. The cycling tours also include routes into the surrounding hills, to natural ponds, to a log park and to the Kokra River canyon below the city.
Events and City Life
Khislstein Castle was named after the Khisl family, who bought it in the second half of the 16th century. In summer, the open-air theatre there offers a varied cultural programme. Kranjska dolga miza at the castle presents culinary specialities from Kranj.
Jazz Kamp Kranj is an international summer music festival that has been held with a series of jazz concerts since 2004. Kranfest is the central summer festival in Kranj for locals and visitors, featuring music, street activities and culinary offerings.
Nature Observation
The SOS Proteus information centre displays rescued olm salamanders and monitors the effects of visitor traffic on the animals. The centre has information panels, video presentations and aquariums with olm salamanders; researchers from the Tular Cave Laboratory guide visitors through the centre.
