Culture and History

The National Liberation Museum Maribor presents a permanent exhibition on the history of Maribor in the 20th century and offers history workshops for children and young people. The Maribor Art Gallery preserves more than 10,000 works of art representing Slovenian visual art and holds the only independent collection of Slovenian video art in Slovenia.

The Maribor Synagogue is one of the oldest surviving synagogues in Central Europe. Sinagoga Maribor is dedicated to researching, preserving, caring for and presenting Jewish cultural heritage. Lent is the oldest and at the same time the most attractive district of Maribor.

The “Variations – Hommage to Franz Liszt” programme of the Maribor Regional Museum, which has been running continuously since 2016, takes place every year in April, May and June, as well as partly during the autumn months, and enables young musicians from Maribor and their teachers to perform in the Knights’ Hall at Maribor Castle.

Food and Drink

The Oldest Vine Museum presents the heritage of the 450-year-old Modra kavčina grape variety. A visit includes a tasting of Queen’s wine or fruit juice. At the Oldest Vine House, wines from Štajerska produced by 55 local winemakers can be tasted, accompanied by a local snack of homemade bread, pumpkin seed oil and salt.

Nature

Maribor City Park and its wider surroundings are protected as a monument of designed nature. The Piramida–Kalvarija nature trail leads from Maribor’s old town through the city park to the three hills of Piramida, Mestni vrh and Kalvarija and is approximately 5 km long. Kalvarija is a 375 m-high hill above Maribor, characterised by vineyards, with an ascent of 454 steps.

Črno jezero on Pohorje is protected as a forest reserve, along with its wooded surroundings. The international Drava Cycle Route connects Italy, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia along a route of approximately 710 km.
