Gorenja Vas: Trails, Culture and Squares
Gorenja Vas combines extensive trails with distinctive cultural sites and a lively village square. The Gorenja vas–Poljane Municipal Walking Circle is more than 85 km long, runs approximately along the municipality’s boundaries and leads to particularly beautiful viewpoints. Its final checkpoint is located at Gostilna Jager in Gorenja vas. On the newly created sections, the route’s own trail markers show the way.
Walking Trails and Cycling Routes
At the western edge of Gorenja vas lies Družinski park Log. A cycling path runs through the park to the settlement of Hotavlje. The park also includes playgrounds as well as activity and walking trails with a viewpoint. This means that different types of trails and areas for spending time are located side by side here, without their respective features being confused.
There is also a separate route description for longer cycling tours: the Gorenja vas–Poljane Municipality Cycling Circle is 115 km long. The Walking Circle and the Cycling Circle are therefore two differently named and differently sized routes in the area around Gorenja Vas. The park at the western edge of the village and the cycling connection running there to Hotavlje complement these two routes with a clearly described local section.
Culture and History
The Church of St. John the Baptist in Gorenja vas is a prominent feature of the village landscape and has several noteworthy artistic and architectural-historical characteristics. Its bell tower has an elaborately designed, two-storey lantern roof with volutes and decorative vases in the late Baroque style of the 19th century. The church’s origins date back to the 14th century; it was first mentioned in 1623. Its vaults were painted around 1700 using the true fresco technique.
From Neško’s Footbridge, walkers can continue to the Church of St. John the Baptist in Gorenja vas. A shorter themed route entitled Along The Traces Of The Rupnik Line begins at the cemetery in Gorenja vas and is suitable for family members of all ages. It passes former barracks, numerous bunkers and the remains of the accommodation used by the builders of the fortifications, and then continues to the prominent Bishop's bunker (Škofov bunker).
Squares and Local Life
Ivan Regen Square is adorned with the Fountain of Love in the Time of Crickets, a work by the academically trained sculptor Metod Frlic. In fine weather, the square serves locals and tourists as a place to sit and relax while listening to the murmur of the water. Every second Saturday of the month, the Market of Agricultural Crops and Products also takes place at Ivan Regen Square.
