Kanianka: Reservoir, Malá Magura and Local History

Swimming and various water sports are possible at the Kanianka Reservoir. Its surroundings are also suitable for cycling, running and walking. To the west of Kanianka, Malá Magura rises steeply; it belongs to the Strážovské vrchy mountain range. Thus, bodies of water and mountain landscapes stand side by side in Kanianka, complemented by a village centre with its own history and religious buildings.

Nature

A prominent feature of the municipality is the Kaniansky dvojkríž. It stands at the highest point of the cadastral area of the municipality of Kanianka. A tourist and cycling ascent to this point is organised. Malá Magura forms the western landscape reference point of the village and, as a steeply rising mountain, belongs to the Strážovské vrchy mountain range.

Culture and History

The Roman Catholic parish church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is located in the village centre. It is the main church of the Kanianka parish and is characterised by a free-standing bell tower. Its construction history includes several precisely dated events: the foundation stone was blessed by John Paul II on 22 April 1990, construction began in May 1992, and the church was consecrated on 7 November 1993.

Among the significant historic sacred buildings in Kanianka is the Chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It was built in 1902 thanks to Štefan Baláž; the first Holy Mass was celebrated there on 14 September 1902. Holy Masses are currently celebrated in the chapel on Saturdays, every week in summer and once a month in winter.

The original settlement core of Kanianka is known as “stara Kanianka”. It lies in the valley of the Kanianskeho potoka and still features traditional linear development along the stream. Earlier generations of residents also wore traditional costumes, especially on festive occasions such as weddings or church visits. Some female residents also describe a distinctive Kanianka embroidery with floral motifs, made using chain stitch or as filled embroidery.

Paths and Quiet Places

The Stations of the Cross in Kanianka are a quiet place of prayer at the foot of the mountain above the new cemetery. They comprise fourteen stations marked by large stones. Together with the organised tourist and cycling ascent to the Kaniansky dvojkríž, they create a village setting in which religious sites and prominent landscape features stand directly beside one another.
