Liešťany: Find accommodation among history and nature

The history of Liešťany, Dobročná and Lomnica has been documented in writing since the beginning of the 14th century. Today, the area combines these historical connections with local folklore traditions and a share of the Strážovské vrchy Bird Protection Area.

History and historical traces

Liešťany was established in 1943 through the merger of the independent settlements of Liešťany, Dobročná and Lomnica. As early as 1332, Liešťany was referred to as Lyssen and Dobročná as Dobrochna. Another historical connection leads to the Diviacka valley: after King Charles Robert confirmed mining rights there in 1337, people began searching for and extracting precious metals.

The local religious buildings are also historical points of reference. Among the exceptions to larger cultural and historical sights in Liešťany are local chapels from the 20th century. Historical seals also suggest that Liešťany once had a parish church dedicated to Saint George.

Folklore and local customs

The LIESKA folklore group plays a special role. It was formed in 1989 following a performance in a chapel in Liešťany during a local church feast. LIESKA regularly takes part in local celebrations for Mother’s Day and in church feasts in Liešťany. At Christmas, Easter and the local church feasts, the group provides the church singing.

At weddings, LIESKA maintains the traditional custom of removing the bride’s wreath at night and putting on the bonnet, known as Čepčenie. The annual carnival programme “Pochovávanie basy” is another recurring tradition. The Municipal Day, Deň obce, is held in Liešťany as a traditional cultural event.

Nature and hiking

Part of the Liešťany municipal area belongs to the Strážovské vrchy Bird Protection Area, SKCHVU 028, within the Natura 2000 network. There is a designated reference point for orienting yourself around the area in front of the Liešťany Cultural House: a tourist map was installed there on 3 October 2018 to help visitors with hiking and orientation in the surrounding area.

Every year, on the first Sunday in May, KST Liešťany continues the traditional star-shaped ascent to Suchý vrch, with a tombola and music. In September, the association also continues the tradition of cooking goulash on Chotej hora. Both events connect a local association tradition with the aforementioned routes and landscape areas, without any further characteristics of the municipal area being inferred from this.

Cycling route through Liešťany

The blue-marked route 2308, the Bojnický cyklookruh, runs through Liešťany. It passes through the area between Nevidzany and Kostolná Ves. The Bojnický cyklookruh can be started at any point and combined with other cycling routes in the district. Thus, alongside the documented connection with hiking, there is also an explicitly described link to the regional cycling network.
