The Zobor Charter of 1113 is an important historical document associated with Opatovce nad Nitrou. Together with later written and ecclesiastical references, it provides a multifaceted picture of the village.
History
Opatovce nad Nitrou was first mentioned in writing in 1424 under the name Apathy. In 1468, Opatovce nad Nitrou became part of the episcopal domain centered in Skačany. These two dates mark different stages in the village’s history and stand alongside the significantly older Zobor Charter of 1113.
Landscape
The Nitra forms almost the entire southeastern boundary of the Opatovce nad Nitrou area. The Teplý potok separates Opatovce nad Nitrou from Bojnice. The terrain is predominantly flat to hilly. The Ponitrianska cycle route also runs through the village along the Nitra, partly on a cycle path and partly on local asphalt roads.
Culture
Sacred buildings include the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, which was consecrated on November 22, 1998. In the upper part of Opatovce nad Nitrou, the Chapel of the Virgin Mary is a landmark. It was completed in spring 1939, and the first Holy Mass was celebrated there in May. The tradition of May Masses has been maintained in the chapel to this day.
On the road to Koš stands a small masonry Neoclassical roadside shrine called Božie muky. The village thus contains different forms of sacred architecture: a church, a chapel, and a roadside shrine, each with its own historical and geographical context.
Events
The traditional lighting of a bonfire for St. John’s Eve was part of the event and symbolically recalled customs celebrating the summer solstice. The event also included tastings of specialties from Opatovce nad Nitrou.
On May 1, 2026, the traditional “stavanie májov” (maypole raising) took place in Opatovce nad Nitrou. The all-day program included sports competitions, attractions for children, an extensive cultural program, and an evening dance. Nositelia tradícií is a regional round of a competition and showcase of folklore groups. In addition, the municipality organizes a procession every year together with the Volunteer Fire Brigade.
