Handlová is best understood through its culture, which is closely connected with mining and the history of its inhabitants. The exhibition “History and Culture of Handlová” presents the history and culture of the Germans living in Handlová. Through archaeological artefacts, it introduces visitors to the history of the Carpathian Germans in Handlová. Mining tools document the extraction of lignite there. A separate section covers the history of coal mining in Handlová from the beginnings of industrial extraction in 1909 to 1945.

Culture

One of the defining historic buildings is the Church of St Catherine of Alexandria, Kostol sv. Kataríny Alexandrijskej, in Handlová. It dates from the mid-14th century and is considered the oldest building in the town. Another chapter of the town’s history is embodied by the Banícka kolónia. It was built as a residential district for miners from throughout the former monarchy who came to Handlová to work. Thus, sacred architectural heritage and the development of the mining town stand side by side.

The Slovenské Banské Múzeum Handlová is housed in a renovated building from 1913 that originally served as a miners’ hotel. At the museum, visitors can experience a replica of underground spaces depicting coal mining from the beginning of the 20th century: its development ranges from manual methods to mechanised extraction. The museum also includes the so-called EKO dielnička. It provides space for extracurricular education, meaningful creative leisure activities and creative activities for all age groups.

Nature

The Banský náučný chodník is accessible year-round. Its green-marked trail is connected to a yellow-marked trail leading to the summit of Malý Grič and a red-marked trail leading to the summit of Veľký Grič. These summits offer beautiful views of Handlová. Along the educational trail, visitors can also learn about activities related to coal mining in Handlová, as well as the fauna and flora of the surrounding area.

The Cesta na Remäta route begins at Námestie baníkov and follows the yellow-marked trail. It passes the post office and the house of services to a car park, crosses a stream over a bridge and then continues up 1. mája Street to the municipal swimming pool. There it joins Pstruhárska Street.

History

The Bralský tunel, also known as Tunel T. G. Masaryka, is part of a railway line built towards Turiec in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The tunnel is 3.0116 km long. The railway line, including the railway viaduct at its lower end, was completed in 1913.
