Jalovec – Accommodation and Historical Traces

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Kostol Božského srdca Ježišovho) was built in Jalovec in 1927 in the historicist style with neoclassical and neo-Romanesque elements. Its history also includes an earlier use: the building originally served as the Chapel of the Virgin Mary before it was reconsecrated on 27 September 1992. A monument to those who fell in the Second World War stands beside the church.

History

Another historical site is located on Humnište. There, the partisan bunker was built in 1944 as accommodation for the Slovan Ráztočno partisan unit. In 2014, the bunker was restored on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising and opened to the public. Thus, its construction, restoration and public accessibility belong to different points in its history.

The preserved stone granaries from the 19th century also point to earlier forms of rural economic activity in Jalovec. In the Huňov forest within the municipal territory of Jalovec, the Pálffy family built a glassworks with five melting furnaces in 1749–1750. Traces of the foundations and shards of glass remain at the former site of this glassworks. The historical craft traditions of the village included woven brooms in the 16th century, shingles and birchwood rings in the mid-19th century, and later shepherds’ vessels, Fujaren and pipes.

The economic and craft history also includes the Pálffyovský Mill, whose remains are still visible in Jalovec. After the founding of the ČSR, the mill and the sawmill operated by Jozef Solčáni processed 400 m³ of wood annually. The equipment included a wooden frame saw and a circular saw. The surviving structural and work-related evidence each represents a specific phase of the village’s history: from the 18th-century glassworks through the craft traditions to wood processing after the founding of the ČSR.

Landscape

The Handlovka and the Jalovský potok flow through Jalovec. The Jalovské Lazy are also located within the territory of Jalovec, at an altitude of over 800 m. This area includes a small meadow. The landscape information thus connects the two watercourses in the village with a higher-altitude location within the municipal territory.

A specific connection is documented for cycling: the 11.6 km-long Nedožery–Brezany–Malá Čausa–Chrenovec–Jalovec–Ráztočno–Remata cycling route passes through Jalovec.
