Tužina between forest paths and culture

Tužina lies on the southeastern foothills of the Strážovská hornatina mountains. The Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area extends nearby, while the forests surrounding Tužina offer opportunities for hiking.

Culture

The municipal museum in Tužina has a permanent exhibition in a reconstructed residential house built in 1905. The museum can be visited year-round, not only seasonally. The exhibition includes objects reconstructed and displayed by the museum itself from the collection of Kornélia Richterová and other residents of the municipality.

The single-nave Baroque Roman Catholic Church of St. James was built on medieval foundations according to plans by the Kremnica master builder J. Vogelt between 1788 and 1797. Its furnishings include a high altar, pulpit, baptismal font, a four-part organ and four 18th-century chandeliers in the Classicist style with richly carved wooden decorations. The church’s interior paintings were restored from 2002 until spring 2007.

At the upper end of Tužina stands the Baroque Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, built in 1818. Its Baroque altar features carvings, a Pietà sculpture and two 18th-century angels. Opposite the church stands the Marian column, built in 1749 in the Late Baroque style and surrounded by an ornately hewn marble wall. The academic sculptor Dušan Hagara completely reconstructed the column; it was rededicated in 1999.

The museum, church, chapel and Marian column differ in their functions and in the surviving details of their furnishings. The museum presents a permanent collection in a residential house, while the religious buildings are defined by their construction dates, styles, furnishings and restoration details. The Marian column complements this heritage as an independent monument opposite the church.

Events

The Tužina Gro(o)ve programme included workshops, lectures, a travel cinema, the Gro(o)ve Market craft and handmade market, as well as programmes for children. In Tužina, the second Sunday in September is also celebrated as Hody, commemorating the consecration of the church. The 11th edition of the multi-genre festival of alternative music Tužina Gro(o)ve was scheduled to take place from 24 to 26 July 2026 at the Hatalisko nature area in Tužina. Thus, the event-related information combines recurring community traditions with a festival date set for a specific period.
