Bojnice Castle is one of the oldest and most important monuments in Slovakia. Around the town, visitors will find historic buildings, nature, wildlife, springs and a cycling circuit as a range of different destinations.

Culture and History

The first written mention of the existence of Bojnice Castle dates back to 1113. A guided tour entitled “Castle and Cave” lasts 75 to 90 minutes. This makes a clearly defined tour part of the town’s cultural offering, whose name already reflects the connection between the building and the underground natural environment.

The historic character extends beyond the castle into the streets of Bojnice. Bencovje Grunt is one of the last surviving traditional houses in the historic streets of Bojnice. The building contains an original medieval cellar made of tuff. Visitors can use the potter’s wheel to make ceramics and paint ceramic products there. Historic building fabric and practical ceramic activities therefore stand side by side in the same place.

Nature and Wildlife

A natural travertine cave lies beneath Bojnice Castle. There is also a landscaped nature and countryside park around Bojnice Castle.

The National Zoo Bojnice is open daily, including public holidays. More than 400 animal species live there. In addition, the zoo school offers its own projects for different school levels and types of schools, as well as for specific visitor groups. At the “Detská ZOO”, children can observe animals up close and even stroke them. These offerings are therefore aimed at different age and visitor groups, with the zoo school explicitly structuring its projects according to school levels, types of schools and specific groups.

Wellness

Kúpele Bojnice uses nine springs with hydrocarbonate as well as calcium- and magnesium-containing water. The temperatures range from 28 to 52 °C. The springs form an independent part of the local offerings and complement the historic and nature-related destinations with water and wellness.

Cycling

The Bojnicko – Dubnický cyklo okruh cycling circuit is approximately 13 km long. It leads from Bojnice via the autocamping site to Šútovské sedlo and then back to the town. The route is therefore designed as a circuit and specifies both the starting point and the section via Šútovské sedlo and the return to Bojnice.
