Veľká Čausa is located in the southeastern part of the Upper Nitra Basin along the middle course of the Handlovka. The village centre lies at an elevation of 312 metres, while the municipal area extends from 285 to 361 metres. Between the river landscape, local history and living culture, this creates a multifaceted picture of a Slovak municipality.

History

Settlement in Veľká Čausa is believed to have begun in the 12th century; the village was first mentioned in writing in 1358. A deed of donation from 1430 lists the municipality under the historical name “Nagy Cheuche”. The restored war grave of Jozef Počuch preserves the memory of a soldier who fell in the Slovak National Uprising.

The artistic craft of making Easter eggs is also part of the cultural identity: Veľká Čausa is considered a centre of this tradition. The Dúbravka folklore group has been active in Veľká Čausa since 1983 and performs at cultural and entertainment events in the village and beyond. Its cultural activities therefore extend beyond individual events within the municipality.

Church and Remembrance

The modern Church of Saint Gorazd was consecrated on 30 May 1999. It is a filial church. The foundation stone for the church was blessed by Pope John Paul II in Vajnory on 22 April 1990. During its construction, the chapel in Veľká Čausa was expanded for worship services; it underwent complete renovation in 2015.

Nature

Two large-leaved linden trees stand in the cemetery. They were designated protected natural monuments in 1975. Their trunk circumferences are 353 and 441 centimetres, and their heights are 25 and 24 metres.

Leisure

Veľká Čausa’s local leisure activities include hiking, cycling, hunting, fishing and mushroom picking. The cycling routes from the Koliba Pacho Resort connect to other officially signposted cycling routes. The resort also has a mini-golf course with 18 holes, and an outdoor children’s playground is available there.

Sports facilities with workout elements and children’s playgrounds have also been built in the public areas of Veľká Čausa. The Koliba Pacho restaurant in Veľká Čausa offers regional food and drinks. In addition, a small marketplace was built in the municipality.
