Winter sports

In the winter sports area of Vitanová, Ski Vitanová offers 4.25 kilometres of ski slopes. The Vitanová–Vrchdolinka chairlift is 965 metres long, overcomes an elevation difference of 243 metres and has a capacity of 2,400 people per hour. Nature

The Oravica flows through Vitanová. As a tributary of the Orava, it belongs to the Ramsar site “Rieka Orava a jej prítoky”; its watercourse is associated with white-throated dippers, kingfishers and otters. In the southern part of the cadastral territory of Vitanová, in Tichá dolina, the Tatranský národný park extends across the area, with the third level of area protection. The national nature reserve NPR Osobitá, with the fifth level of area protection, is also located in the part of the cadastral territory of Vitanová belonging to the Tatranský národný park.

South of Vitanová lies Juráňova dolina, where the Bobrovecký potok and the Oravica meet. It is described as an easy walk through a gorge with beautiful views. In Oravice, 8 kilometres from Vitanová, there are thermal baths open all year round.

Culture

The settlement of Vitanová was founded in 1552. At that time, a new settlement and a Šoltýstvo were established on a cleared area called “paszeky Vitanova”. Among the visible cultural monuments in the village is the column of Saint Roch, created in 1770, a folk stonework piece in the rustic Baroque style and a national cultural monument. Also dated to a specific year is the grave cross at the grave of the former village judge Vojtašák in the lower cemetery: it dates from 1851 and bears reliefs of Saint Martin, Saint Andrew and an unknown saint.

The Roman Catholic parish church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Vitanová was ceremonially opened in 1932. Its altars were made by the master Dlugopolský from Trenčín. A preserved log house consists of massive beams and retains its original openings as well as a wooden portal with a round-arched entrance. Vitanovská heligónka is named as one of the important cultural and sporting events.

Activities

Vitanová and its surroundings offer opportunities for hiking in nature, including hiking trails near Oravice. For cycling, cycle paths are planned in the built-up area along existing local roads towards the neighbouring municipalities and the Oravice recreational zone. Outside the built-up area, they continue along existing field paths as two-way routes.
