Oravsky Biely Potok: Stonecutting Tradition and Cultural Heritage

Oravský Biely Potok lies in the valley of the Studený potok in the Skorušina Mountains. The village combines this clear geographical setting with a distinctive stonecutting tradition, sacred buildings, folklore, and a designated cycling route. As a result, the focus here is not on general impressions of the village, but on specific traces of the craft and named destinations.

Culture and History

Oravský Biely Potok became one of the centres of stonecutting production in the Orava region. In connection with the stonecutting trade, the village was first mentioned in 1728 as a centre for the production of millstones. The local tradition also included ring-shaped well rims, up to two metres in diameter, known as “címere”. This designation is one of the distinctive terms associated with the local craft, without requiring a general collection of stone objects.

The Cesta Kameňa project presents the stonecutting tradition and artefacts of Oravský Biely Potok as cultural heritage. The project also includes the planned restoration of four stone crosses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Cesta Kameňa likewise envisages barrier-free access to the cemetery for visitors with reduced mobility and four bilingual information boards at the entrance. The project status remains unchanged: these are planned measures, not a statement that they have been completed. The individual components of the project therefore range from presenting the cultural heritage to restoration, access, and on-site information.

The village’s sacred buildings include Kostol sv. Štefana, kráľa. The single-nave church was built in the Classicist style between 1797 and 1800. Its interior furnishings are predominantly Baroque. The construction period provides the historical context of the church, while the style and interior furnishings describe different aspects of the same place of worship. In addition, Oravský Biely Potok has 13 stone crosses with statues of saints. FS Osľárik preserves the folklore traditions of Oravský Biely Potok. A stone nativity scene is considered a particularly attractive place to view in the public space.

Landscape and Routes

State Road 2/584 runs through Oravský Biely Potok. The Podbiel–Ťatliakovo jazero cycling route passes through the village and is suitable for mountain bikes.
