Culture and Local History
The historic centre of Tvrdošín was declared a heritage zone on 1 June 1991. The Tvrdošín heritage zone comprises Trinity Square and the adjacent historic urban fabric with the Gothic wooden church. Trinity Square is home to the late Baroque Marian column, which was created at the end of the 18th century in the workshop of the Belopotocký stonemason family from Oravský Biely Potok.
Tvrdošín Town Hall is considered the finest and best-preserved monument from the second half of the 19th century. It was built between 1872 and 1875 on older foundations dating from the 18th century. The sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk also dates from the late 18th century, stands on the north side of the churchyard, and was created by stonemasons from the Bielopotocký family.
The Márie Medveckej Gallery is open to the public daily from 10:00 to 16:00 during the 2026 summer season. The admission price includes the permanent exhibition and one additional exhibition.
Visitor Information
The All Saints’ Church is open to the public daily from 10:00 to 16:00 during the 2026 summer season, from 1 May to 30 September, except Mondays. Outside the season, visits are possible if arranged at least one day in advance.
The Skalka Rock Chapel was carved into a rock around 1870 and later developed into a pilgrimage site. At the Skalka pilgrimage site, the faithful gather for prayers, litanies, the Stations of the Cross, and a Mass on the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The Chapel of Saint Anne in the Oravice district of Tvrdošín was built between 1817 and 1820 and restored in 1864. Masses are regularly held on Sundays in the Sacred Heart Church in the Krásna Hôrka district of Tvrdošín, which was built in 1890.
The town of Tvrdošín organizes the Folklore Festival under Osobita annually. The venue is the natural amphitheatre in Oravice, a district of Tvrdošín, where the 35th edition took place in 2026. The Michalský jarmok has an established tradition in Tvrdošín. Visitors can find handicrafts, traditional specialities, handmade products, and various refreshments there.
Nature
The Orava and Oravica rivers, as well as their tributaries Medvecký potok and Hldočín, flow through Tvrdošín. The Tvrdošín balancing reservoir, with a stated volume of 2.9 million cubic metres, is located on the Orava.
The small-area protected landscape site CHA of the Orava River encompasses Tvrdošín on both sides of the river and is subject to the fourth level of protection. The Orava and its tributaries form a Ramsar wetland of international importance. The courses of the Orava and Oravica rivers also form an aquatic-terrestrial biocorridor.
Bučník, Magura, and Furkaska are considered mountains and are located in the vicinity of Tvrdošín. Bobrowiec is considered a mountain and is located in the surroundings of Tvrdošín. Tatrzański Park Narodowy is located in the wider regional surroundings of Tvrdošín.
Leisure
The Tvrdošín municipal indoor swimming pool operates year-round and serves sporting, swimming-sport, and relaxation purposes. It offers recreational swimming to the public. The wellness area includes a Finnish sauna, a steam sauna, and an infrared sauna, as well as a whirlpool and loungers.
The cycle route below the Roháče in the Skorušinské vrchy is rated as moderately difficult. On good surfaces, it is partly possible to ride it on racing bikes away from state roads. The Štefanov nad Oravou–Dlhá–Malatiná MTB route leads to the Márie Medveckej Gallery and offers the opportunity to continue along the Tvrdošín balancing reservoir or to cross the Orava into the centre of Tvrdošín via a footbridge.
