Liesek: Cross-country Skiing and Culture
Winter and Nature
In winter, the cycling route running through Liesek is used for cross-country skiing. The northern part of the cadastral area of Liesek lies within the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area. The cadastral area of Liesek is also part of the Horná Orava Natura 2000 site. The distinction is important for spatial classification: the first statement refers to the northern part, while the second refers to the entire cadastral area. Thus, the winter route connection and the two protected-area references each relate to clearly defined spatial contexts.
Along the Way
The cycling route from Trstená via Liesek and Suchá Hora to Nowy Targ in Poland passes through Liesek. Several rest areas with benches and seating are located along the route. As part of the Cesta okolo Tatier project, guardrails were installed along the cycling path in the Liesek area. The section is therefore characterized not only by its sequence of places but also by specific elements along the route. Rest areas and guardrails are among the features explicitly associated with this route through the Liesek area.
Culture and History
The cultural references range from folklore and church architecture to an exhibition. They bring together an ensemble founded in Liesek, a building with specified stylistic elements, and an exhibition title that explicitly refers to Liesek’s past.
The folklore ensemble FS Skorušina was founded in Liesek in December 1988. FS Skorušina specializes in Goral folklore from Hladovka and Suchá Hora. FS Skorušina and FS Oravský Spiežovec performed in the program and presented folk dances and folk songs. This connects the ensemble’s founding in Liesek, its regional folkloric specialization, and its joint performance with FS Oravský Spiežovec.
The church Kostol sv. Michala archanjela was extended between 1996 and 1998. It combines Baroque elements with modern Functionalism. The church’s original side altars also came from Červený Kláštor. The church building thus combines an extension assigned to a specific period, two named architectural styles, and the origin of the original side altars in Červený Kláštor.
The exhibition “Pohľad do minulosti Liesku” opened in 2016. Its title explicitly directs attention to the past of Liesek and complements the folkloric and church-related cultural references with an exhibition.
