Nižná – Uhliská Ski Centre and Culture

Nižná combines winter activities with a distinctive landscape, cultural attractions, and events. Uhliská Ski Centre near Nižná nad Oravou in the Skorušinské vrchy mountains has four ski lifts and slopes for beginners to intermediate skiers. The centre is complemented by a ski and snowboard rental service, a ski school, a snowboard school, and a restaurant.

Winter

Uhliská Ski Centre represents the town’s clear connection to winter sports. The designated range of slopes extends from beginner areas to intermediate difficulty. The ski and snowboard rental service and the two schools also provide specific options for equipment and instruction. The restaurant is likewise part of the centre.

Landscape

Nižná lies on an alluvial terrace of the Orava River. The terrain ranges from hilly to mountainous. The municipality includes the eastern slopes of Oravská Magura and the Skorušinské vrchy. The limestone landscape near Nižná is dominated by Ostražica, which rises to 767.7 metres.

Culture

Ostražica is home to a fortified Hallstatt-period hilltop settlement that was an important centre from the end of the Late Bronze Age. Archaeological finds also document an apparently continuous prehistoric and early historic settlement on the hill lasting approximately 500 to 600 years.

Another historic site is Františkova Huta in the cadastral area of Nižná. Visitors can see preserved perimeter walls, the remains of the building with the bellows, and a pile of iron ore. The technical monument complex was built in 1836. The preserved complex includes the remains of the hammer mill, inlet and outlet channels, a bellows chamber, a factory hall, and a blast furnace. Františkova Huta also has a car park on a meadow beside the main road.

Folklore enthusiasts can attend the Nižnianske krpčeky folklore competition in Nižná. The Pltnícke dni are considered an attraction for tourists in Nižná. The recurring Pltnícky deň includes the traditional beating on the raft and has already reached its 30th edition.

Events

The Cykloklub Nižná organises the Okolo Tatier cycling race together with the municipality of Nižná and the Žilina Self-Governing Region. Every year, the club organises approximately 30 cycling activities in the Orava region. The Cykloklub also organises hikes in the Western Tatras, including Roháče, in the High Tatras, and in the Little and Great Fatra.

During Okolo Tatier, the peloton set off through the streets of Nižná at 8 a.m. The route passed through the surrounding villages towards the Suchá Hora border crossing; the route ended in Nižná.

At the end of August, demonstrations of iron ore smelting using an ancient technique take place at Františkova Huta as part of the popular Dní železiarstva. The Ostražica Cinema is also part of the local offering and has a cinema auditorium with 308 seats.
