Vysoká Nad Kysucou: Bible Garden, Pilgrimage and Local History

An unusual feature of Vysoká Nad Kysucou is the Bible Garden. The themed garden is planted with trees and shrubs mentioned in the Bible; these include all the trees of Paradise and the most significant plants of the Holy Land. Visits are only possible with a guide and must be arranged in advance. The garden is located near the parish church; access is from the car park in front of the post office. The requirement for a guided tour and the agreed access arrangements should be taken into account when planning the timing and location of this visit.

Culture and Remembrance

The Church of Saint Matthew the Evangelist dates from 1732. The E. A. Cernan Memorial Room is located in the municipal office building of Vysoká Nad Kysucou. Embedded there are a thin segment of the Apollo 10 heat shield from 1969, which was burned, as well as a piece of the outer skin of Apollo 17. The STOPA monument depicts a lunar dome bearing imprints of spacesuit boots.

Above the municipality are the preserved remains of a Jewish cemetery, one of the last memorial sites commemorating the once numerous Jewish community in Kysuce. The remains are located in Nižný Kelčov above the railway station. Thus, ecclesiastical history, Jewish remembrance and space travel stand side by side in Vysoká Nad Kysucou as clearly distinct themes.

Trails and Pilgrimage

The Okruh Vysokou nad Kysucou circular trail begins at the municipal office in Vysoká Nad Kysucou. It passes through the settlement of Vrchrieka on a red-marked hiking trail over the Javorníky ridge towards Semeteš. The starting point, settlement, trail markings and ridge route provide a clearly described sequence that you can use to fit the tour into your own day plan.

Every year, a pilgrimage takes place on the Sunday near the feast of Saint Anne to the chapel dedicated to Saint Anne on Mount Kyčera in Vysoká Nad Kysucou. During the pilgrimage, the pilgrims carry a statue of the Virgin Mary. The date is therefore tied to the proximity of the feast day and should be regarded as a separate religious occasion, distinct from the circular trail and the permanent cultural sites.

Visiting on Site

The E. Cernan Memorial Room can be visited on weekdays from 07:15 to 15:15 or on other days by prior arrangement. Together with the required guided tour of the Bible Garden, this results in different visiting arrangements that you can take into account when scheduling your visit to the area.
