Čadca: Ski hotel, cross-country skiing and culture

The Beskydsko-Javornícka cross-country skiing trail, with a clearly designated section through the Vysoké Javorníky, represents the winter character of Čadca. The main section runs from Makov Bumbálka on the border with the Czech Republic to the Čadca–Husárik locality and is approximately 54 km long. Cross-country skiing is therefore one of the specific activities associated with the town and its immediate regional surroundings.

Cross-country skiing and views

Another distinctive outdoor option is the Rozhľadňa Briava observation tower. It has been open to the public since 8 October 2025 and offers panoramic views from the summit of Čadca, the Javorníky, Kysuce and the Moravian-Silesian Beskids. The view thus extends across several named landscape regions and complements the winter cross-country skiing experience with a viewpoint.

Nature

One of the most striking natural features is Milošová-Megonky in Čadca. The locality is designated as a natural monument because of its rock or stone spheres and is considered a European natural rarity. In the Megoňky locality in the Milošová district of Čadca, sandstone spheres with diameters of up to 3 m can be found. Their occurrence was discovered in 1988 during stone extraction at the Padyšák quarry.

Megoňky can be reached by Čadca city bus no. 4 to the Milošová terminus; from there, it is about a 300 m walk to the quarry. Another natural attraction is the Bukovský Spring, a weakly mineralized sulfur spring that can be reached on foot from Čadca city center in about 20 minutes. A marked hiking trail also leads to the sulfur-rich mineral springs in the valley of the Rieka stream.

Culture

The Baroque Church of St. Bartholomew stands in the center of Čadca. It was built in 1734 on the site of an older wooden church and is a national cultural monument. A historical site can be found at Námestie slobody: the monument there marks the location of the former parish house, where representatives of the Slovak National Council and military leaders of the uprising were based in early December 1848 during the so-called winter campaign of the Slovak volunteers.

The Kysucké múzeum exhibition in Čadca also combines historical objects with modern interpretation. It includes the Horelický treasure, with a selection of 250 silver coins, and is complemented by multimedia equipment, smart technologies and innovative elements. One of the most modern features is an interactive multimedia table.

A memorial plaque on a school building on A. Hlinku Street commemorates a writer’s work in the Kysuce region from 1924 to 1927.

Traditions

The cultural calendar includes Čadčiansky kotlík, a goulash-cooking competition held for the 13th time as part of the Jánsky Festival of Traditions. The festival also includes a handicraft market, creative workshops and demonstrations of traditional crafts.
