Klokočov: Nature, Cross-Country Skiing and Sacred Buildings

The Na Biely Kríž z Klokočova route runs along the Czech-Slovak border area; in winter, there is a groomed cross-country ski trail there. It starts in Klokočov, in the Vrchpredmier district, and covers 3.6 kilometres with an elevation gain of 299 metres in approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. The route length, elevation difference and approximate duration provide different measures of the undertaking on this route.

Nature

The Klokočovské skálie nature reserve lies within the cadastral area of Klokočov and is subject to the fifth level of protection. Its sandstone wall is 2 to 20 metres high and approximately 300 metres long. It is characterised by the spherical weathering of the sandstone, which distinguishes the wall from an evenly layered rock formation.

The nature reserve includes fir and fir-spruce forests as well as spring areas of the foothill zone on lime-free rocks. The Polkova protected area comprises transitional bogs, oligotrophic lowland bog meadows, extensively managed low-growing pastures and waterlogged purple moor-grass meadows. Thus, the surroundings of Klokočov include both forested spring areas and various wet and open habitats.

The Klokočovské rašeliniská are listed in the Slovak national list of sites of European importance; there are twelve such sites in Klokočov. The landscape therefore combines rock, forest, springs, bogs and pastures with different protection and site types. These terms do not refer to the same terrain but classify the natural features according to their respective characteristics.

The Z Klokočova do Čadce cycling route is 18 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 300 metres and is suitable for mountain bikes. Compared with the shorter Na Biely Kríž z Klokočova route, this one focuses on the cycling route with its own distance, elevation gain and explicitly stated mountain-bike type. The two descriptions can therefore be classified separately according to length, elevation gain and type of activity.

Culture and History

A small sacred complex dating from 1937 is located above the Pantokovci settlement in Klokočov. It can be accessed approximately 1 kilometre from the main road. The complex thus combines a specific historical date with a location above the settlement and the stated distance from the main road.

The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Klokočov is a Secession building with Neo-Gothic elements and was constructed between 1918 and 1928. Its interior furnishings from 1928 include a Baroque crucifix from the 18th century. The church thus makes it possible to distinguish between the construction period, stylistic features and an older furnishing item from a different period.

The foothill areas of Kysuce have a historic settlement structure shaped by gradual settlement since the 16th century during the Wallachian colonisation. They contain vernacular architecture buildings of varying cultural and historical value. The building culture thus relates both to the development of the settlement structure and to individual buildings.
