Horné Pršany: Accommodation, Cross-Country Skiing and Kremenia

Horné Pršany combines winter trails with a distinctive natural setting and local traces of history and folk traditions. In winter, groomed cross-country ski trails run along the municipality’s marked hiking trail network. In addition, the “Trasa L – Králiky – Horné Pršany” cross-country ski route ends above Horné Pršany. The town’s local trail network and a connection from the direction of Králiky are therefore both part of its described winter surroundings.

Trails

Marked hiking trails lead from Horné Pršany to various destinations in the Kremnica Mountains. Tri kríže and Králiky are mentioned; where applicable, the route extends as far as Kremnica. There is also a cycling connection: a connecting cycle route links Malachov with Horné Pršany.

Horné Pršany is a terminal municipality and can be reached by bus from the Radvaň-Kráľová district of Banská Bystrica via Pršianska terasa. From the bus stop in Horné Pršany, marked tourist signs lead to the Kremenia Cave. The walk from the municipality takes about 20 minutes. Visitors can also reach the Medzihrádky locality, also called Hrádok, via a dirt road past the sheepfold. Archaeological research was carried out there in the past.

Nature

In Horné Pršany, Kremenia is a protected natural monument of geological and geomorphological value. Its varied surface formations and outcrops are significant because they make it possible to observe silicification processes. The area’s interesting landforms are connected with the transformation of the original limestone and dolomite rocks into silizite.

The landscape of Kremenia features distinctive, clearly prominent rocky ridges. Rock cliffs frequently form along their edges, and there are also occasional smaller rock towers. The “Horné Pršany – Kremenia” educational trail ends at this natural monument, which contains interesting caves. At four stations, it provides information about the history of the municipality of Horné Pršany and its sights.

A second educational trail, “Horné Pršany – Rozhľadňa”, ends below the summit of Lažtek Hill in the Kopanice locality. There stands an observation tower offering views of the surrounding area. The educational trail has four stations providing information about the historical and natural features of the municipality and its surroundings. It also provides information about tourism opportunities in part of the Kremnica Mountains.

History and Culture

The bell tower is one of the municipality’s historic structures. Inside is a late Baroque bell dating from 1757. Its maker is unknown; the bell is a cultural monument.

A settlement of the Lusatian Urnfield culture was discovered in the Hrádok locality in Horné Pršany. The Medzihrádky locality is also known as Hrádok and can be reached via the aforementioned dirt road, where archaeological research was carried out in the past.

The Fašiangy, the traditional Slovak Carnival season, are also associated with distinctive details passed down through tradition. At the Fašiangy celebrations in Horné Pršany, the song “Šikovný čardáš” was played. It has no lyrics and, according to the description, was not played anywhere else in Slovakia. The Fašiangy ended at midnight on Tuesday with the burial of the double bass. A historical description also reports that they began around noon on Sunday with five male participants in traditional dress.
