Panchià: Walking Trails, Bridges and Mountains

Getting your bearings in Panchià

Panchià is located on State Road 48 of the Dolomites. Those travelling to Panchià by public transport can reach the village by Trentino Trasporti buses and ski buses from larger towns in Val di Fiemme. The Avisio stream runs through Panchià. Panchià is dominated by the Massiccio del Cornon and Monte Agnello.

Walking and trekking

Panchià has the “pontolaia” walking trail. Panchià also has the “Sentiero di Pensa” trail. There is also the “Giro delle Roe” walking trail in Panchià. The walk “Il ponte coperto di Panchià” follows the Avisio to an old covered larch-wood bridge. The route “Il ponte coperto di Panchià” begins at Piazza Chiesa and descends along Via Cavelonte to the covered bridge. Along the walking trail to Val Cavelonte, you can admire the monumental tree “Pecio del Cuco”. The Giro del Monte Cornon is a moderately difficult trekking route for Panchià and Tesero. The trails therefore range from several walking routes to a moderately difficult trekking route. A walking trail is a route intended for walking. In general usage, a trekking route means hiking over longer distances; “moderately difficult” indicates an intermediate level of challenge.

Cycling routes through the landscape

For cyclists, the Ciclabile di Fiemme is an easy, 20-kilometre cycling route. The Ciclabile di Fiemme follows the Avisio through villages, meadows and forests and passes through Panchià. The combination of 20 kilometres and an easy rating provides a clear framework for planning a cycling trip. “Ciclabile” is the Italian term for a cycle path. The Easy Bike Ring - verde connects Ziano di Fiemme and Panchià. A cycling route is a designated route for bicycles.

Bridges and structures

The covered wooden bridge Ponte coperto di Panchià is unique of its kind in Trentino and connects Panchià with Val Cavelonte. The Ponte vecchio over the Avisio has a pitched wooden roof and is dated to 1903. A pitched roof consists of two roof surfaces that rise towards a ridge.

Church, frescoes and woodworking

The parish church of S. Valentino in Panchià dates back to 1190. The Capitèl dei Nastasi in Panchià is a Gothic frescoed aedicule. An aedicule is generally a small devotional structure framed by architectural elements. Frescoes are paintings on walls or ceilings; the Gothic period refers to a medieval era in art. Panchià has a local woodworking tradition.

Mountain traces and an August celebration

On the slopes of Cornon, characteristic shepherds’ inscriptions in red ochre, locally called “ból”, have been found for more than three centuries. Red ochre is an earthy pigment. In the Chiesa del Redentore in Cavelonte, Holy Mass is celebrated every year on the first Sunday in August. Holy Mass is a Catholic religious service.
