Elevation and nature
Brentonico lies on a plateau ranging from around 500 to over 2,000 metres in elevation, between Monte Baldo, Monte Altissimo and Vignola. A plateau is an elevated, relatively flat landscape. From various points near Brentonico, you can see Lake Garda, the Pre-Alpine peaks and the plain.
The Monte Baldo di Brentonico protected area encompasses extensive beech forests, alpine meadows, subalpine shrub communities and rocky habitats. Alpine meadows are characterised by open areas, while beech forests form dense stands of trees. Subalpine shrub communities are low-growing woody vegetation found at higher elevations. Rocky habitats, by contrast, have little continuous vegetation. The permanent Orto dei semplici and Giardino botanico del Monte Baldo cover approximately 6,000 square metres. Nature enthusiasts can include the Orto dei semplici and Giardino botanico del Monte Baldo as a separate item on their itinerary.
Winter activities on the high plateau
On the high plateau of Brentonico, the Centro Fondo San Giacomo has cross-country ski trails for both classic technique and skating. The Centro Fondo San Giacomo also has a footpath for hikers and a route suitable for snowshoe hiking. At the Centro Fondo San Giacomo, classic skiing follows parallel tracks, while skating involves pushing off to the side. Snowshoes increase the surface area bearing on the snow and distinguish this way of moving from ordinary walking.
A panoramic path leads from Mori to Brentonico through forests, meadows and open landscapes. For cyclists, the challenging but rewarding climb from Mori to Brentonico follows the Monte Baldo provincial road. Several panoramic rest areas are located along this climb.
The Oasi dei Sensi in the heart of Brentonico invites visitors to experience the garden anew through touch, smell and hearing. The senses of touch, smell and hearing extend perception beyond sight.
Culture and history
The Museo del Fossile del Monte Baldo presents 40 display cases in six rooms, featuring fossils from the Monte Baldo range. The palaeontological collection of the Museo del Fossile del Monte Baldo documents animal groups that lived in marine environments and evolved successively during the period from approximately 150 to 180 million years after the Triassic. Palaeontology studies earlier forms of life through fossils and their traces.
The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo preserves remnants of medieval painted decoration on its vault. The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo also has Romanesque frescoes in its apse, attributed to artists from Verona from the second half of the 14th century. Frescoes are wall paintings executed on fresh plaster.
The Palazzo Eccheli Baisi was built at the end of the 16th century by joining together several pre-existing medieval buildings.
