Fontanazzo in winter: cross-country skiing and ice climbing

For a winter stay in Fontanazzo, the cross-country skiing loops in the Mazzin–Campitello cross-country skiing area are a clearly described option: they are suitable for beginners and are groomed daily by the operator. The Rodolon cross-country ski trail is located near Fontanazzo and is illuminated twice a week for night-time cross-country skiing excursions. The approach to the Fontanazzo di Destra ice-climbing route takes about 15 minutes from Fontanazzo. The access route begins at a car park near a wooden bridge over the Avisio.

Walking trails and routes

Several trails provide access to the surrounding area, with varying details regarding their routes and level of difficulty. The SAT E577 trail leads from Fontanazzo di Sotto to Camerloi and is 6,100 metres long. The walking trail “Tra prati, risorgive naturali di fiume e rocce eruttive” begins in Campitello and leads through the open area between Fontanazzo and Campestrin. From Fontanazzo, the SAT 577 trail leads on foot through Val de Dona; the walking time is approximately two and a half hours, and the difficulty level is EE. The “Il cammino dei pitores” trail passes through Mazzin and Fontanazzo. Walks towards Val Udai and Val di Dona begin in Fontanazzo.

Along the Avisio

The “Pista ciclopedonale delle Dolomiti di Fiemme e Fassa” cycling and walking route runs along the Avisio through meadows, forests and villages. Along the Fiemme-Fassa cycling and walking route there are picnic areas, fountains and playgrounds. The municipal playground in Fontanazzo is located on the left bank of the Avisio.

Church, town hall and regional history

The “l Pèster de Fascia” monument was created in 1983 by sculptor Rinaldo Cigolla. The bronze statue “El Pèster de Fascia” stands next to the Madonna del Carmine church in Fontanazzo and beside the town hall of Fontanazzo di Sotto. It has become a symbol of the Fassa Valley. The town hall in Fontanazzo di Sotto is decorated with a fresco of the patron saint Santa Giuliana and four bas-reliefs. The bas-reliefs depict former hunting practices, forest management, wool spinning, agriculture and livestock farming. The Madonna del Carmine church in Fontanazzo di Sotto is a 17th-century church with a distinctive bell tower clad in wooden shingles. In the wider area around Mazzin and Fontanazzo, some of the oldest remains of the Raetian population in the valley were found on the left bank of the Avisio, including the remains of an ancient fortress. These remains are kept at the Museo Ladin di Fascia.

The regional bus route 101 stops in Fontanazzo and operates along the Canazei–Moena–Cavalese–Trento route. The Val di Fassa tourist organisation operates an office in Fontanazzo and advises visitors on experiences and activities. The free Alta Val di Fassa local map covers Mazzin, including Campestrin and Fontanazzo. Among other things, it shows sports rental shops, grocery stores, typical products, restaurants, mountain huts and places to stop for refreshments.
