Lago di Lagolo

Lago di Lagolo is an alpine karst lake. A karst lake is a lake whose basin was formed through dissolution processes in soluble rock. Lago di Lagolo lies at an altitude of approximately 950 m and has an elliptical basin measuring about 250 × 140 m, with a maximum depth of 7 m. The word “elliptical” describes an elongated, oval shape.

Shore, Beach and Water

The shores of Lago di Lagolo are home to a reed wetland that helps purify the water and retain sediments. A reed wetland is a damp area along the shore where reeds grow. The reed area at Lago di Lagolo provides habitats for waterfowl breeding. Spiaggia di Lagolo is a freely accessible, unequipped beach. Lifeguard service is scheduled at Spiaggia di Lagolo from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Fishing with a license is permitted at Lago di Lagolo daily from May to October, except on Thursdays.

Trails with Different Profiles

Sentiero 618 leads from Piana delle Viote to Lago di Lagolo. The VIOTE–LAGOLO route passes by Caverna and Sorgente Stengiador. The 1.5 km-long, flat and easy circular trail around Lago di Lagolo is suitable for families with children and pushchairs. A circular trail is a route that returns to its starting point. The more challenging “Senter de le Mule” hiking trail has an elevation gain of 183 m, takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, and is not suitable for pushchairs. Elevation gain indicates the difference in altitude to be overcome while ascending. Variant 1 – Bivio Viote – Strada per Malga Brigolina is not signposted.

Church and Malga di Lagolo

The church of Lagolo was converted from the stable of an abandoned malga and dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. The church of Lagolo was blessed in 1970. The interior of the church of Lagolo is characterized by a striking, visible wooden roof structure. The Casara of Malga di Lagolo, also known as Ex Malga Lagolo, was built in 1905. Seasonal transhumance of livestock at Malga di Lagolo took place from the beginning of June to the end of September. Transhumance refers to the seasonal movement of livestock between different grazing areas.
