Historic Sites and Sacred Buildings
A Roman villa in the hamlet of Cò de Ela (Capo della Villa), south of Marone, was still in use in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. It is therefore among the older traces of settlement in the area around Marone.
The parish church of San Martino di Tours in Marone was consecrated in 1754 and features noteworthy Baroque decorations. The construction date and furnishings provide two specific points of reference for visiting this sacred building.
The sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rota was built in the 16th century in a gorge in the Opol Valley. The sanctuary’s older church preserves frescoes by Giovanni da Marone.
Vello also has historic churches. Construction of the Church of Sant’Eufemia began in 1699 and was completed before 1716. The Church of San Pietro stood within a fortification and was associated with the main settlement of Pregasso at the time; until 1578, it served parish functions.
Cycling, Strolling and Hiking
The flat Vello–Toline cycle and pedestrian path runs from Vello di Marone to Toline di Pisogne. The Vello–Toline cycle path follows the former lakeside road, carved directly into the rock along Lake Iseo, and is not accessible to motorised vehicles. The flat route and lakeside location distinguish this path from the connection to Corna Trentapassi.
A trail from Marone railway station reaches Croce di Marone in approximately two hours. This approximate time provides a concrete guideline for planning a hike.
The trail from Vello to Corna Trentapassi is recommended only for experienced hikers because of its exposed position and incline. For this route, the exposed position and the incline are decisive factors when choosing the path.
Climbing and the Strada dell’Olio
Marone has numerous rock faces and several equipped routes for outdoor climbing. Climbing therefore forms a distinct focus alongside the historic sites and trails by the lake.
The Strada dell’Olio is an approximately 13-kilometre-long route within the municipality of Marone. Its approximate length provides a clear time and distance framework for planning this route, without extending it beyond the municipal area.
Practical Orientation on Site
The Marone Infopoint distributes information material about excursions, cycling routes and trekking in the surrounding area. This provides an on-site contact point for these three areas.
Marone is connected to the Brescia–Iseo–Edolo regional railway line. The station is located in the historic centre, a few minutes’ walk from the landing stage. For travelling by train, both the rail connection and the location between the town centre and the landing stage are therefore relevant. The line runs via Brescia and Iseo to Edolo.
