Voltino: Culture, Landscape and Routes to Monte Bestone

Voltino combines a distinctive historical character with striking landscape views and routes in the surrounding area. The village is considered one of the oldest villages in the municipality of Tremosine sul Garda.

Culture and History in Voltino

A central landmark is the Church of San Lorenzo Martire in Voltino. It has three naves and is completely decorated with frescoes. On 23 June 1838, it was elevated to the status of a parish church. In 1859, the building was expanded: the side naves were added, another bay was added to the central nave, and the entrance was moved to its current position on the north side.

The church's altarpiece is also noteworthy from an art-historical perspective. It depicts the Madonna with Saints Lorenzo, Stefano and John the Baptist, dates from 1575 and was created by Luca Mombello. Thus, San Lorenzo Martire brings together structural changes from the 19th century and an older sacred work of art.

Another locally significant date is the Feast of the Patron Saint of Voltino, celebrated on 10 August. Archaeological finds in the surrounding area also point to a long settlement history: materials from an Iron Age settlement were found near Voltino. A Roman tablet dating from the 1st century AD was also found in the village of Mure near Voltino.

Wayside Shrines and Frescoes near Voltino

Between Voltino and Ustecchio, in Pozza, there is a wayside shrine with a fresco dating from 1668. The work is dedicated to the Madonna as Helper of Sinners. The fresco of the Madonna del Caravaggio is also still clearly visible on the same wayside shrine.

Landscape and Distinctive Natural Features

From Voltino, there are views of Monte Baldo and Lake Garda. The Diaclasi di Voltino is a deep rock fissure.

Circular Route and Hiking Trail to Monte Bestone

For brief orientation on site, an official circular route lists the churchyard in front of the small church of Voltino as its first stage. The churchyard is in the immediate vicinity of the car park.

From Voltino, Hiking Trail 110 leads to the summit of Monte Bestone in approximately 45 minutes to one hour. This time indication remains an approximate range and is intended as guidance for planning. The route to Monte Bestone begins in the village of Campi–Voltino.
