Culture and history

Castello di Udine stands on a hill above the old town. People with reduced mobility can reach Castello di Udine via lifts accessed from Vicolo Sottomonte. The castello houses the Galleria d’Arte Antica, with important works of art from the 14th to the 19th century, including paintings by Carpaccio, Caravaggio and Tiepolo. Also located there, the Museo della Fotografia displays 19th- and 20th-century photographs by photographers active in Friuli, including Pignat, Bujatti and Brisighelli. Secular frescoes from the second half of the 14th century have been preserved in Palazzo Savorgnan della Bandiera.

Construction of today’s Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata began in 1236. People with reduced mobility can access the cathedral via a ramp on the north side. Chiesa di Sant'Antonio abate was originally a Gothic building from the 14th century and was consecrated in 1354. It contains the tombs of four of the last Patriarchs of Aquileia.

Museums and special insights

Casa Cavazzini is a historic 16th-century palace and houses the Museo d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea. A 16th-century Venetian cistern can be seen there through a glass floor. The Museo Etnografico del Friuli presents collections on the traditions, folk culture and history of Friuli. The Museo Friulano di Storia Naturale is a permanent institution that researches, collects, preserves, interprets and exhibits its own heritage.

The «Percorso Tiepolo» takes visitors to Tiepolo’s works preserved in Udine, in the Castello, the Museo Diocesano, the Chiesa dell’Oratorio della Purità and the Cattedrale. Admission to the Oratorio della Purità is free. This named route therefore leads through several different places where works by the artist have been preserved.

Nature and trails

Parco del Cormor is Udine’s largest park and covers approximately 30 hectares. Its facilities include densely planted woodland, open meadows, a viewpoint, paths and small roads, as well as a children’s playground. Parco del Cormor is also accessible to people with disabilities.

For cycling, the FVG1 Ciclovia Alpe Adria connects several areas: the route passes through Udine as part of a connection linking Austria and northern Slovenia with the Friulian Adriatic coast.

Squares and Friulian cuisine

Piazza Matteotti, also known as Piazza San Giacomo, is an open-air salon surrounded by colourful buildings and elegant arcades, with tables belonging to historic cafés. In Udine’s historic centre, a Tajut is served with ham and typical Friulian cheeses. It consists of a small glass of Friulian white wine.

Film, festivals and events

The Far East Film Festival takes place every year over nine days of screenings at Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine. The programme includes retrospectives, talks with leading figures in Asian cinema and a themed discussion on Asian cinema every afternoon.

Friuli DOC includes concerts, performances, product discoveries, tastings, workshops, sporting activities, children’s activities, as well as stalls and meetings. Alongside the film screenings, this means that other clearly defined types of events are represented in the city’s public cultural programme.
