Forni Di Sopra is located in the Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti Friulane. The valley extends from the valley floor through forests and meadows in the middle elevations to rocky peaks. This gives the village a diverse alpine setting that combines sporting activities, wildlife observation and cultural destinations.
Lifts, elevation and active experiences
The first section of the Varmost chairlift leads to Som Picol, at an elevation of 1,450 metres. From there, the Som Picol mountain hut can be reached; it serves typical cuisine from Forni Di Sopra. When planning a stay, this makes it possible to combine a mountain experience and regional cuisine in a single excursion.
In the village, Dolomiti Adventure Park offers 11 suspended courses with Tibetan bridges, walkways and zip lines. The park also features the Powerfan, a 15-metre-high free-fall jump. The two attractions have different focuses: while the courses connect various stations at height, the Powerfan centres on a single jump.
The Ferrata Adventure Climb Varmost is a via ferrata on Clap Varmost. Starting from the chairlift's mountain station in the Som Picol area, it takes three to four hours and initially includes a canyon section and a suspended Tibetan bridge. Another longer excursion is the route to Bivacco Marchi-Granzotto. It starts and ends at the Ponte Giaf car park and takes six to eight hours.
Natural environment and wildlife observation
The Sentiero Truoi dai Sclops passes vertical rock walls, alpine meadows and forest vegetation. At high elevations, rare or endemic flowers grow; the trail also passes through habitats of ibex and chamois. The landscape is therefore characterised not only by its peaks, but also by the succession of rock, forest, meadows and high-altitude flora.
In the Area Faunistica Parulana, the grounds cover five hectares within the Parco delle Dolomiti Friulane. The facility allows visitors to observe lynx, foxes, deer and owls. Visitors can choose between a leisurely circuit lasting approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes and a 2-hour-and-30-minute visit focusing on the area's biodiversity.
Trails, the Ecomuseum and a family perspective
The Ecomuseo Fornese is an open-air museum created through the collaboration of the residents of Forni Di Sopra. It presents the area's tangible and intangible heritage. One of its offerings is a water-themed walk from the Vico district along the Tagliamento into the natural environment of the Dolomiti Friulane. The route passes streams, cascades and artesian springs.
For younger visitors, the Ecomuseo Fornese offers the Sentiero dei Bambini. The nature trail is 400 metres long and includes 20 stations where visitors can interact directly with nature. Alongside longer mountain excursions, this provides a shorter nature trail with many individual stations.
History, sacred spaces and craftsmanship
The ruins of Castello di Sacuidic are located in the municipality of Forni Di Sopra, near an ancient road and a ford across the Tagliamento. Castello di Sacuidic is dated to around the end of the 12th century. Information panels explain the excavations, the various settlement phases, life at the time and the work carried out to restore the site.
In the Cella district, Chiesa di San Floriano stands as a national monument on a rocky spur overlooking the Tagliamento. The church contains frescoes by Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo and an altarpiece by Bellunello. The Bellunello altarpiece is an eight-part polyptych bearing a signature and dated 1480. The area's religious history also includes a votive oratory built in 1515, which is associated with the Santuario Madonna della Salute and became a destination for numerous pilgrims.
Ciasa dai Fornés houses the Museo Il Filo dei Ricordi. Exhibits include agricultural tools and products of traditional textile processing made from wool, hemp and linen, dyed with plants. Local traditions also include scarpéts: traditional Carnic shoes made of embroidered velvet and produced exclusively by hand.
