Ampezzo combines geological, artistic and church-history themes with opportunities for hiking. Specific points of interest include museums, sacred art, historic churches, as well as trails on the valley floor, at Passo Pura and towards the surrounding peaks.
Location between the Tagliamento and Lumiei
Ampezzo lies at an altitude of 560 metres between the Tagliamento River and the Lumiei mountain stream, in the heart of Val Tagliamento.
The Museo Geologico della Carnia, the Pinacoteca Marco Davanzo, the Duomo di San Daniele Profeta and the Chiesa della Santissima TrinitĂ in Oltris each offer a different focus. They are complemented by the Foresta di Ampezzo at Passo Pura, the Biotopo di Cimacorso and several trails, each with its own character.
Geology and art in Ampezzo
At the Museo Geologico della Carnia, the history of Carnia from 450 to 40 million years ago can be traced. A collection of rocks and fossils, explanatory panels and multimedia displays are available for this purpose. Notable exhibits include pterosaur fossils found in Preone. Museum visits are available on request.
The Pinacoteca Marco Davanzo combines a permanent exhibition with a temporary section renewed every year. The gallery also includes a reconstructed studio containing the painter’s materials and tools.
Churches, artworks and local history
The Duomo di San Daniele Profeta houses paintings by Nicola Grassi from 1725. The cathedral also has a Baroque altar by Giovanni Saidero from 1641.
The Chiesa della Santissima TrinitĂ in Oltris was consecrated on 16 August 1771. Inside is a painting of the Trinity attributed to Gian Pietro Fubiaro. The church is also associated with the craft culture of Carnia.
The Cappella degli Alpini is located on State Road 52 and can be reached on foot from the road. After the 1976 earthquake, it was decided to relocate the Chiesa di San Rocco in Voltois to safer ground in the village of Pocis.
Hiking between the valley floor, forest and peaks
The Foresta di Ampezzo at Passo Pura offers opportunities for hiking. A network of marked trails also leads from Passo del Pura to the surrounding peaks.
On the valley floor, the Biotopo di Cimacorso offers opportunities for hiking. The “Bosco Flobia” educational trail was created for people with visual impairments. The “Tiziana Weiss” nature trail was established. The Foresta di Ampezzo and Biotopo di Cimacorso are located in different places: at Passo Pura and on the valley floor, respectively.
Announced mountain hike
The 36th Giro delle Sorgenti was announced for 28 June 2026 as a non-competitive mountain hike.
