Landscape and Districts

Ovaro lies between the Col Gentile mountain range to the west and the Arvenis mountain range to the east. The cultural attractions are not concentrated in a single central location but are spread across various districts and nearby settlements. Mione, Cella, San Martino and Cludinico represent different historical and craft-related sites within the municipality. Mione is home to historic buildings, Cella to a museum and the production of roof tiles, San Martino to Early Christian and Early Medieval remains, and Cludinico to the mine.

Architecture in Mione

The Palazzo Micoli Toscano, built in 1836, is located in Mione. Also in Mione is Casa De Corte, a typical example of 17th-century Carnia architecture. With its construction date of 1836, Palazzo Micoli Toscano belongs to the 19th century, while Casa De Corte represents a significantly older architectural period in Carnia. The two buildings thus represent different historical periods in the same district.

Churches and Early History

The Pieve di Santa Maria di Gorto stands between the districts of Agrons and Cella. It is an old Carnic parish church and lies along the Cammino delle Pievi. At the same time, it is one of the oldest buildings in Friuli. In San Martino, the remains of an Early Christian basilica and an Early Medieval necropolis can be visited. Here, the religious building and archaeological remains are visible evidence of different historical periods.

Museums and Historic Buildings

The Museo della Pieve di Gorto is located in Cella’s former village dairy. It displays Late Antique and Lombard finds, as well as stone fragments from Lombard-Frankish places of worship. The building housing the Museo del Legno e della Segheria Veneziana dates from 1755. Ovaro thus preserves both a former agriculturally oriented building and a historic museum building.

Mining and Kiln Operations

Guided tours of the Cludinico Mine are available for groups by prior booking. The “Planelas e Scugjelas” exhibition also documents the work and products of the kiln operations in Alta Carnia. While the tour is tied to Cludinico, the exhibition’s subject matter extends beyond Ovaro into Alta Carnia.

Craftsmanship in Cella

Green-painted roof tiles are produced in Cella; they are characteristic of many traditional houses in the valleys of Carnia. This craft is therefore directly connected with the appearance of traditional houses in the region.

Local Traditions

The Sagra del Malgaro, traditionally held in July, includes a market selling typical gastronomic and craft products. The event thus brings together two elements of local tradition: culinary products and handcrafted goods.
