Pescara on the Adriatic Coast: Culture, Beaches and Nature

On the Adriatic Coast, Pescara is a coastal destination with wide, golden beaches. In the city centre, the pedestrian area of Corso Umberto I begins at Piazza Rinascita and is ideal for strolling among shops and cafés. Coast, city life, art and nature come together here in a diverse public space.

Culture

Several museums give Pescara a distinctive cultural profile. The Museo Paparella Treccia Devlet houses a permanent collection of historic majolica from Castelli. It comprises 151 majolica artefacts from the 16th to the 19th century. The Museo Civico Basilio Cascella preserves more than 600 works by the Cascella family. In the city centre, the IMAGO Museum offers 1,200 square metres of exhibition space for modern, contemporary and photographic art; its permanent collections are located across several floors. The Museo delle Genti d’Abruzzo has multimedia stations and digital audio guides in several languages.

The Museo Casa Natale di Gabriele d’Annunzio also combines personal history with historical evidence. On display are war mementoes, historic photographs, explanatory panels about the poet’s military service and generals’ uniforms. Gabriele d’Annunzio’s birthplace was declared a national monument in 1927. Another cultural landmark on the waterfront is the Nave di Cascella: the Carrara marble sculpture was inspired by an ancient galley and stands near the beach. It is recognised as a place of cultural interest and has been described as a witness to Pescara’s institutional and collective identity.

Coast

The coastal landscape includes the Marina di Pescara. There are sailing and nautical schools there, and the equipment required for water sports can also be rented. The marina is connected to the airport, railway station and motorway. Along the southern C1 Bike to Coast section, the Porto Turistico is one of the main attractions.

In the Pineta dannunziana area stands the Aurum, a former distillery that is now a cultural centre. The Aurum hosts events, exhibitions and conferences. The Piazzale Michelucci at the Aurum provides space for summer events, exhibitions, evening cinema, concerts and theatre performances.

Getting around

The Ponte del Mare is a 466-metre-long bridge for cyclists and pedestrians that connects the north and south of Pescara. The bridge has a cycle path and a pedestrian walkway. The C1 Bike to Coast connects to it in different sections: the northern section is 4.2 kilometres long; according to the route description on which it is based, a travel time of 15 minutes is given for it. The southern section connects the Ponte del Mare with Pescara’s border with Francavilla al Mare.

Nature

The Pineta dannunziana nature reserve covers 56 hectares, of which 35 hectares remain in a natural state. The protected area is home to more than 100 bird species, including many migratory birds, as well as plants typical of wetlands. Walks and picnics are possible in the Pineta dannunziana nature reserve.
