Historic Centre and Notable Buildings

The historic centre of Caramanico Terme is characterised by narrow streets lined with old houses. A distinctive entrance is the Porta delle Nasse, an ancient gateway to the historic centre.

Other buildings include the former Convento delle Clarisse, a fortified convent dating from 1636. From the Church of Madonna del Castello, a short path leads to the summit of Colle Civita.

The Romanesque Abbazia di San Tommaso Becket was begun in 1202 together with the adjoining monastery and remained unfinished. The abbey’s central portal features a high relief of Christ blessing, accompanied by the twelve Apostles. The three-aisled interior contains 13th-century frescoes.

The singing of Sant’Antonio is still practised in Caramanico Terme today. The groups from the town and the hamlet of Scagnano perform the temptations of the patron saint of animals in the squares of the town and its hamlets.

Nature, Views and Challenging Trails

The Valle dell’Orfento Nature Reserve was established in 1971 and lies entirely within the municipality of Caramanico Terme. A centre in Caramanico Terme provides tourist information about the town and the Valle dell’Orfento, organises excursions, guided tours and environmental education workshops, and rents backpacks and child carriers.

On Colle Civita, at an altitude of 1,100 m, there is a viewpoint above the town of Caramanico Terme and the Valle dell’Orta. From there, the view extends to the Morrone.

For longer tours, the Anello del Ponte della Pietra e Valle di Sant’Onofrio circular route is classified as difficult. It is 18.5 km long, takes around six hours and has an elevation gain of 940 m.

The path to the Eremo di San Bartolomeo in Legio leads to the hermitage where Pietro da Morrone, the future Celestine V, lived for several years with a few companions.

Museum with Accessible Cultural Activities

The archaeological section of the Museo naturalistico e archeologico Paolo Barrasso displays Italic and Roman finds discovered in the Parco della Maiella. It is also accessible to visitors with reduced mobility and offers activities for blind people.

Thermal Centre Temporarily Closed

The thermal centre in Caramanico has a large inhalation department for the treatment of respiratory diseases, which is also suitable for treating children. There is also a mud therapy department offering treatments based on thermal mud for osteoarticular and rheumatic pain, as well as other musculoskeletal disorders.

Travelling by Train

Travel to Caramanico Terme by train is via the Rome–Pescara line to Scafa station. From there, a connecting public transport service to Caramanico Terme operates from the station forecourt.
