History

St. Antonius Chapel is a branch church of Kirmutscheid. Its Late Gothic choir bears the year 1525 on a keystone. In the 17th century, the chapel was extended by a low, two-bay nave. Permission from the Adenau Commandery of the Order of St. John was required for the construction. The chapel also has a wooden altar dating from 1790.

The Kottenborn Mill was built in the 18th century. It was first mentioned in old lease books in 1728. The mill was shut down in 1954.

Nature

The Müllenwirft Loop leads to the Kottenborn Switzerland viewpoint on a ridge and descends through the Kottenborn Forest into the Wirftbach valley. The viewpoint features panoramic information boards and a seating area. From the ridge, hikers can look across Kottenborn toward Aremberg, Reifferscheid, and Rodder; the view also extends across green volcanic cones.

Hiking Trails

In the immediate vicinity, In the Footsteps of the Knights of the Order, a 41.6-kilometer circular hiking trail divided into two stages, runs through the area. The first day ends at St. Antonius Chapel in Kottenborn. The fourth stage of In the Footsteps of Old Mills leads from Wirft via Barweiler and Kottenborn to Quiddelbach and Adenau. The route passing through Kottenborn is marked throughout with its trail symbol. Bus route 881 connects Adenau Market with Kottenborn.
