The former Benedictine monastery in the town of Tegernsee was founded in 746 and was once one of the most important monasteries in old Bavaria. Its history is also reflected in the local collection at the Museum Tegernseer Tal and in the former role of the parish church of St. Quirinus. Until 1803, the church served as the abbey church of Upper Bavaria’s most important Benedictine abbey. The dates refer to different milestones: 746 marks the monastery’s foundation, while 1803 marks the end of the parish church’s use as an abbey church.

Museums with Different Areas of Focus

The Museum Tegernseer Tal presents local history collections featuring pictorial and written documents, as well as artifacts from the monastery’s more than 1,000-year history and from the Wittelsbach family’s influence at Tegernsee. Other holdings include ethnographic objects from the Tegernsee Valley, among them significant furniture dating from the 16th to the 19th century. The Olaf Gulbransson Museum at Tegernsee is a branch gallery of the Bavarian State Painting Collections. Boat Trips and Walks in the Town Center

The Rathaus Steg 1 and 2 boat landings are located in the center of the town of Tegernsee. The Herzogliches Bräustüberl and the Museum Tegernseer Tal are just a few minutes’ walk away. From Rathaus Steg 1, passengers can take the southern circular route on lines C and D, as well as the grand circular route on lines A and B. A literary walk of about two kilometers follows the trail of the Tegernsee town and monastery coat of arms. Unlike the museum offerings, it focuses on the coat of arms; its approximate length gives you a specific indication of the distance. Tegernsee therefore offers a range of cultural experiences: collections, a permanent exhibition, boat trips and a walk with a literary connection.

Cultural Attractions in Miesbach

Miesbach also has its own cultural identity. The Waitzinger Keller cultural center in Miesbach offers opera, operetta, musicals, cabaret, concerts, children’s events, traditional events and exhibitions throughout the year. With a core collection of more than 3,000 objects, the Miesbach Local History Museum presents the natural and cultural landscape of the Oberland region. Its holdings include examples of Miesbach furniture painting, religious folk art from the period when Miesbach was a pilgrimage destination, and tools and equipment from guilds, crafts, homes and farms. The collection also includes a farmhouse parlor, a shoemaker’s workshop and a hatmaker’s workshop.
