The Malerwinkel in Egern Bay inspired painters, poets and composers in their work. Together with its location on the southern shore of Lake Tegernsee and views of the impressive mountain scenery, it shapes the landscape and cultural setting of Rottach-Egern. Visitors interested in the town will find a different focus here than at Wallberg: the bay is associated with artistic inspiration, while the mountain offers activity and views.

At over 1,700 metres high, Wallberg is Lake Tegernsee’s local mountain. It is ideal for both long walks and challenging hikes. This range of options is helpful when planning your day: a longer walk and a challenging hike are different undertakings, so choose according to the activity you have in mind. Wallberg also offers panoramic views of Lake Tegernsee and the Alps.

Wallberg: cable car, paragliding and toboggan run

The Wallbergbahn cable car takes visitors up Wallberg in comfort and safety. If you plan to take the cable car, check the current timetable beforehand, as operating hours may change. At the top, panoramic views of Lake Tegernsee and the Alps await. The mountain is also a popular launch point for paragliders, who make use of the favourable wind conditions at Lake Tegernsee.

For a winter stay, the natural toboggan run is a particularly specific attraction: Wallberg is home to Germany’s longest natural toboggan run, which is more than six kilometres long. Operations may vary by season, so check the current conditions before your visit. Tobogganing, paragliding and hiking are different ways to enjoy the same mountain, not interchangeable variations of one tour. Which one suits your plans also depends on when you travel.

Lakeside and heated swimming pool, and horse museum

The Rottach-Egern lakeside and heated swimming pool has a large sports pool, a whirlpool and air-bubble loungers. For children, there are paddling pools with different water temperatures of up to 33 °C, connected by a water slide, as well as play equipment and a water bell. This means the facilities include both a sports pool and dedicated water-play features. Opening arrangements and children’s facilities may change; check the current conditions before your visit.

The Gsotthaber Hof Museum offers a different focus: this family museum is all about horses. Children can see, hear and feel things there. The horse theme is clearly distinct from the activities at Wallberg and the facilities at the swimming pool. When planning your stay, you can therefore consider whether you are more interested in outdoor activities, water facilities or a museum focused on families.

Seasons and local traditions

The traditional Rosstag takes place every year on the last Sunday in August; changes by the organisers are possible. The annual Almabtrieb (cattle drive from the mountain pastures) is held in Rottach-Egern in late autumn, with exact dates varying. The two events therefore fall at different times of year. If you would like to plan your trip around either event, check the relevant date before booking.

The Passion displays in St. Laurentius parish church are also tied to a particular time of year: during Holy Week, changing life-size display figures are shown in the Holy Sepulchre. As the display is seasonal, it is advisable to check before travelling. The Rosstag, Almabtrieb and Holy Week displays therefore offer very different points of reference for planning your trip.

Transport fares and culture in the wider destination of Miesbach

Since December 2023, Rottach-Egern has been part of the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV). One ticket can be used on all participating transport companies. As membership and fare rules may change, check the conditions that apply on your travel date before setting off.

The Waitzinger Keller cultural centre hosts operas, operettas, musicals, cabaret, concerts, children’s events, local-tradition events and exhibitions throughout the year. With a core collection of over 3,000 objects, the Miesbach Local History Museum presents the natural and cultural landscape of the Oberland region. Examples in the collection include Miesbach furniture painting, religious folk art, tools from guilds and crafts, as well as a farmhouse parlour, a shoemaker’s workshop and a hatmaker’s workshop.
