Late Gothic churches and a local tradition
The branch church of St. Leonhard in Reichersdorf is a Late Gothic, four-bay hall church. Its slightly recessed chancel has a three-sided end. Built of plastered tuff stone, the church was constructed and consecrated in 1496. Four-bay means that the hall is divided into four bays: you can picture the layout as a series of sections, with a slightly recessed chancel.
The church also houses a small Late Gothic winged altar dedicated to St. Achatius, created by Erasmus Grasser in 1506. Its figures show the enthroned saint surrounded by angels; the panel paintings depict the legend of Achatius. The figures and paintings thus offer different insights into the depiction of the saint and his legend.
In Wilparting, the pilgrimage chapel is dedicated to Saints Marinus and Anian. According to local tradition, the Irish missionary bishop Marinus and his deacon Anian were martyred in 697 at the site where Wilparting Pilgrimage Church stands today. The story is therefore closely tied to the location of the present-day church and continues to be passed down as a local tradition.
The Leonhardifahrt as an autumn event
Since 1684, St. Leonhard’s Church in Reichersdorf has been the focal point of the annual Leonhardifahrt, held in autumn. It takes place every year on the second Sunday in October. While the church’s architecture and furnishings are place-specific topics to consider when planning a trip, the Leonhardifahrt points to a specific date. Coffee experiences and directions from the A8
The DINZLER coffee experience tour takes visitors through the DINZLER Coffee Experience World and offers a glimpse into the work of the master roaster. The public tour takes place once a month; booking and registration must be completed online in advance. If you want to make the tour a set part of your travel plans, register ahead of time.
The location by the motorway also provides a useful point of reference: Irschenberg is a few hundred metres from the Munich–Salzburg motorway. The DINZLER restaurant, with around 800 seats, is right by the Irschenberg exit on the A8. The town’s proximity to the motorway and the restaurant’s specific location at the exit are two different points of reference.
Comparing the viewpoint and cycling tour
The Irschenberg viewpoint is a pavilion on a small hill above the A8. From there, you can look out over the Inn Valley, towards the Wendelstein and the Wilparting Pilgrimage Church. The viewpoint can be reached quickly from Irschenberg village square via StegangerstraĂźe; a route brochure also recommends making a detour there. The access from the village square is specified for the viewpoint, while the route recommendation features it as a destination for a detour.
The cycling tour named “Irschenberg” is 8.7 kilometres long, has 57 metres of elevation gain and is rated easy. It starts at the TSV Irschenberg sports pub and passes through the A8 underpass. It also includes a short section on St2077 and two crossings of the B472, both identified as hazards. So the easy rating goes hand in hand with specific road sections: it does not mean that the route is free of road traffic. Keep these details in mind when comparing the cycling tour with the short walk to the viewpoint.
