Baratier: Hotels and Accommodation

The old village of Baratier lies at an altitude of 870 metres on the Torrent des Vachères. The natural landscape stretches from the shores of Lac de Serre-Ponçon and the Plaine du Liou to the summit of Pouzenc, encompassing the typical landscapes of the Southern Alps.

Nature and Trails

Baratier offers hikers five signposted hiking trails. Four of these trails start at the Place du Village; a signposted walking trail begins at the picnic area by the spring of Jean Blanc.

The Via Domitia passes through Baratier. It is a traditional route used by Italian pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, running from the Col de Montgenèvre to Arles, and has existed since the Middle Ages. The section passing through Baratier is marked in white and red.

The Boucle de la Mûre is an easy, 5.9-kilometre circular hiking trail starting in Baratier and is suitable for family outings. A family treasure hunt also leads through the streets of Baratier. Mountain biking is practised in the Plaine du Liou or in the Baratier municipal forest.

Culture and Village Character

The Church of Saint Chaffrey is part of Baratier’s architectural heritage. The Château de Baratier is a large square building constructed a short distance below the church.

Baratier preserves its local folklore heritage through the groups Revioure and l’Escoureta Dou Parpaïoun. They perform folk dances and sketches in the local dialect.

At the Place du Village in Baratier, passing pilgrims can see a statue of Saint James created by the ceramic artist Marcel Piot and inaugurated on 21 May 2016. The Clapier des Monges archaeological site is part of Baratier’s interesting cultural heritage.
