Nature

The Tour du Vallon de Rioupape is an easy hike along an educational trail for exploring L'Épine. The route passes blue marls and a petrifying river with tufa formations. The Boucle de Grand Bois is a very easy, shaded hike along paths at the edges of lavender fields and through pine and downy oak forests.

Hiking

Several hiking trails lead from L'Épine to the Duffre, the highest peak in the Baronnies provençales. The L'Épine–Le Duffre route follows the ridges of the Sarcéna and Aup mountains before reaching the summit of the Duffre. The Le Duffre hiking route (No. 3) leads to the barren summit of the Duffre at 1,757 m.

The Bonnet Rouge route leads to the summit of Bonnet Rouge at 1,645 m. From a viewpoint, you can see across the Blème Valley and the highest peaks of the Buëch.

Culture and History

The hilltop village of L'Épine was already inhabited from 6000 BC. During its heyday, it was dominated by a castle with a keep, known as a castrum, and had fortifications.

Les Peintres à L'Épine is an annual painting and sculpture event held at the end of July. It includes a week-long exhibition in the Chapelle Saint Sébastien, followed on Sunday by an exhibition of artworks in the village streets. Every summer, the Chapelle Saint Sébastien hosts exhibitions as part of Les Peintres à l’Épine.

The Foire aux Courges takes place every year on the Saturday closest to September 17. In 1996, this revived a local fair tradition dating back four centuries.
