Nature
Saint-Véran is the first stage of the famous Tour du Queyras (GR58) and a starting point for hikes on trails suitable for different levels of ability. The trails around Saint-Véran offer numerous mountain-biking routes of varying difficulty, suitable for conventional bicycles and e-bikes.
From Saint-Véran, cycling tours lead through the valleys of Queyras and to the Col Agnel pass at 2,744 metres and the Col d’Izoard pass at 2,360 metres. Both passes are known from the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia. The Navette de Clausis provides access from Saint-Véran to the Blanche Valley and the Italian border.
Culture
Saint-Véran’s traditional fustes are houses built from stacked larch logs, typical of Alpine architecture. Saint-Véran bears the “Plus Beaux Villages de France” label, awarded for the combination of traditional architecture and spectacular natural surroundings.
History
The Grand circuit de la mine passes by the Musée du Soum and the Four des Forannes; the Four des Forannes houses an exhibition on copper mining. Le Soum – Musée Arts et Traditions is located in a building whose walls have housed the lives of the people, women and animals of this high-altitude mountain village since 1641. Le Soum can be visited independently; guided tours are also available for groups.
Astronomy
On two levels, the Maison du Soleil et de l’Astronomie offers educational exhibitions, explanatory videos, interactive modules and immersive installations about the Sun. Visitors can carry out safe direct observations of the Sun there using special glasses and a solar telescope installed on the centre’s terrace.
