Saint-Paul-Sur-Ubaye: Hotels and Accommodations

Mountains and winter

The Col de Vars is located in the municipality of Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye; its cycling ascent climbs 1,000 vertical metres to an altitude of 2,108 m. Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye has numerous marked snowshoeing routes that lead through nature that remains unspoilt.

The Tour du Plan de Parouart circular trail leads from Maljasset around a wetland plain that formed after a major landslide dammed the Ubaye Valley. The Refuge de Maljasset is located in the hamlet of Maljasset at an altitude of 1,905 m, in a very old farmhouse with a slate roof, vaulted rooms and a south-facing terrace. The Refuge de Chambeyron is an FFCAM mountain hut at an altitude of 2,626 m in Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye.

History and culture

Fort de Tournoux was built from 1843 onwards and has been considered complete since 1865. It extends over more than 700 vertical metres. The Batterie des Caurres was added in 1880 as an extension of Fort de Tournoux and covers it from the summit with new guns.

Fort de Tournoux can only be visited as part of guided tours booked in advance from May to September; for safety reasons, only the upper Batterie des Caurres is accessible to the public.

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Fouillouse and its enclosed grounds were fully classified as a Monument historique on 4 April 2019. The interior frescoes of the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Fouillouse may date from the 16th century and may be among the most significant examples in Provence.

The Musée de Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye is dedicated to the blacksmith Albert Manuel (1910–1991). It is housed in a converted barn and presents mountain life before mechanisation through agriculture, domestic life and crafts. The Musée de Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye also reconstructs a traditional dwelling from the Ubaye region and displays domestic work, the processing of wool and hemp, as well as historic crafts.

The Musée de la moto de Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye displays almost 70 roadworthy two-wheelers dating from 1925 to 1996.

Local attractions

The Brasserie des Hautes Vallées offers tastings on site and tours by appointment. It uses organically farmed malt and hops and produces traditionally brewed craft beers.

The Marché des producteurs et artisans de Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye offers local bread, vegetables, prepared dishes, syrup, goat cheese, beer, honey and meat.
