Méolans-Revel: Hotels and Accommodation

Culture and history

The Laverq priory was founded in 1135 and elevated to an abbey in 1220. The present-day Church of Saint Antoine in Laverq, dedicated to Saint Anthony the Great, dates from the 15th century and is representative of the rural religious architecture of the Ubaye.

In Revel, the very old Church of Saint-Jacques, dedicated to Saint James the Greater, stands on a rocky spur above the Ubaye Valley; it can be dated to the 12th century. Inside is a marble sculpture of Saint James from the 15th century. A framed painting depicting John the Baptist can also be seen there.

The history of the local timber industry includes the former hydraulic sawmill in Méolans-Revel, built in 1936. During a guided tour of the former hydraulic sawmill, visitors can see the machinery and gearing room; a board is also sawn in front of them using water power. Today, the former hydraulic sawmill is dedicated to tours and demonstrations showing the working methods of sawyers from the 1950s.

Landscape and trails

The Laverq Valley was added to the register of the department's picturesque landscapes in 1981. The longer Lavergan loop trail leads to the Belvédère du Duc and offers panoramic views over the Laverq Valley and its mountains; the route takes three hours and is 3.3 kilometres long.

Activities

Kayaking and rafting trips are offered on the Ubaye in Méolans-Revel. There are 107 climbing routes in the Chaudon sector of Méolans-Revel. The Rapid’eau Park offers rafting, kayak rafting, canoe rafting, hydrospeed, canyoning and orienteering at a single location.

Aqua’Rider offers canyoning from its Base du Four à Chaux in Le Martinet, Méolans-Revel. Aqua’Rider's canyoning activities include abseiling, jumps and natural slides in mountain stream beds. EVP Eau Vive Passion offers canyoning from its riverside location below the village of Méolans-Revel.

The Kid Park in Méolans-Revel offers a children's high ropes course with two loops and obstacles such as suspension bridges, vines, zip lines, rocks, tunnels and kayaks. Aventura Park at Rapid’eau Park offers four courses for adults and three courses for children.

Food and production

The Lachanenche family distillery, founded by Nicole and Daniel Million Rousseau, produces whisky, pastis, liqueurs, aperitifs and spirits. Distillerie Lachanenche produces organic alcoholic beverages without additives, extracts or colourings, using fresh fruit, wild plants collected in the surrounding mountains or organically farmed produce.
